What Would You Consider the Pinnacle of Great DVD Packaging/Cover Art?

I was curious as to what everyone considers to be the best packaging and/or cover art on the market.

I would give both of those honors to the first season of Carnivale. It is easily the most appealing DVD on my shelf, whether with the spine out or face out.

As for upcoming movie cover art, I think the 2-disc Walk the Line and the 1-disc King Kong look great. Oh, and Capote. The lack of quotes on that cover, so long as Sony doesn't tinker with it, is awesome, as well as the use of the near-perfect poster art.

edit: Ehhhh, I just noticed that I put this in the wrong thread. I am not sure if I have the ability to move it myself... mods?

Freaks and Geeks Yearbook Limited Edition

For the more standard packaging, I liked the recent Titanic Collector's Edition with it's simple graphic design, heavy cardboard and nice texture.

Let's see...just a few out of my collection..

Packaging wise:
Pink Panther Cartoon Collection & Film Collection
King Kong Collectors Tin
Brat Pack DVD Collection (in book binder)
Videodrome: Criterion Collection
Family Business: Season 1
Evil Dead 1 & 2 - book of the dead series
Pearl Harbor - 4 disc Directors Cut
Alien Quadrilogy
Sin City - Recut, Extended, & Unrated
I also like all the Warner digipaks including Gone With The Wind - 4 disc

As far as cover art goes:

I like The Warner 2 disc sets with the original poster art esp. the classics
Fear & Loathing: Criterion Collection
The Good The Bad And The Ugly: SE
The Deer Hunter: Legacy Series
Cannibal Holocaust: Collectors Edition
Naked Lunch: Criterion Collection

I always liked the classiness and simplicity of recent Criterion releases like My Own Private Idaho and Ugetsu, both for the nice packaging and subtle cover art.

Agreed; Criterion Collection are some of the classiest designs I've seen on any DVD. I think you can really see the difference in the higher price point.

I also like the Warner gangster collection because they used the vintage posters. Looks cool to me. I fooking hate Photoshopped, cobbled-together covers, like many MGM covers, or Blood and Wine. Jesus.

Take a look here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=450544

It's mostly imported material, but some R1 stuff pops up from time to time.

A second vote for the Freaks and Geeks Yearbook Limited Edition.

Seabiscuit Gift Set

I always liked the original Fight Club packaging (bonus points for the studio for not featuring Brad Pitt on the cover in favor of doing something cool). Lord of the rings EE, and the new edition of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly are good too.

Shazam 02-14-06 09:07 PM

Appleseed, hands down.

canaryfarmer 02-14-06 10:16 PM

The Alien Head rules over all.

darkshadowdog 02-14-06 11:29 PM

Anyone seen the new Planet of the Apes set that's coming out? Looks kick ass... Search it on DDD (sorry, don't know how to post images).

Fincher Fan 02-14-06 11:36 PM

Fight Club, first and foremost. The Lord of the Rings: EE sets are also nice.

Dazed 02-14-06 11:57 PM

I really like the cover art on "A Night to Remember" and "Seven Samurai"

I'll third that and add a Strong Agreement.

First thing that came to mind was my F&G YLE.

No doubt.... The Evil Dead Book of the Dead. I guess it revolutionize the way how a DVD is packaged. Hey back then (around 2001-2002), no one can match what Anchorbay did with Evil Dead.

ShallowHal 02-15-06 02:16 AM

The Hellboy Director's Cut (3 disc set) is pretty cool. Not counting the mini bust, either, which is pretty cool. If you count the bust, I, Robot is at the top of my list.

Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Pearl Harbor, and Robin Hood: POT (2 discs) are all nice.

OldBoy 02-16-06 12:27 PM

i like the
"Star Wars Trilogy" silver/WS box.
LOTR: EE big box
King Kong Tin will look great next to...
King Kong (2005) (R4) Tin
Serenity Tin (R4)
Kill Bill Japan LE Box
Buffy: The Complete Collection
Phantasm Sphere (R2)
Dune (R1) and Flash Gordon (R2) have nice steelbook.

Willh51 02-16-06 01:08 PM

I've always loved the Pulp Fiction/Jackie Brown C.S. cover arts.

The artist rendered inserts in the Star Wars trilogy are beautiful.

I love the box of the Hitchcock set and the collages, but not how the discs are packed overlapping.

Agreed that Walk the Line C.E. is awesome.

joliom 02-16-06 01:15 PM

The keepcase. Specifically the Amaray Safe Case.

I find it amusing how (on this and other forums) the opinions are so sharply divided on this. It's either the greatest thing ever, or the most hideous thing ever. Unfortunately that divide is also in my household as my wife has forbidden that thing to darken our happy home.

gryffinmaster 02-18-06 01:20 PM

A good majority of the Criterions, especially Kurosawa's covers for Throne of Blood, Rashomon, etc., are extremely well done.

Emma311 02-19-06 03:11 PM

I really like the Sex & The City series set & my Fight Club dvd.
