What a waste of money. So many deals to be had!

Gut, I can get you a parachute that was only used once for $999, and comes with a lifetime guarantee -- should it fail to open I'll replace it at no additional cost to you. Let me know if you're interested.

dont see any problem with this since most of us here have collections costing us way over 3k anyways in the course of 4, 5 years, heck maybe even just one or two, maybe this couple just wants to catch up with us.

Nah.. they're most likely crooks.

LorenzoL 07-20-04 02:05 PM

I think that everybody is making a big deal about this. Who cares!

I know that is very rare to see somebody spends that much money in one shot in a store for DVDs but as long as they are not committing a crime (and as far as I know it has not been made illegal), they can buy whatever they feel like at the store.

logboy 07-20-04 02:39 PM

there are some people on discussion groups with masses of dvds... i look at my shelves and get worried : i have about 200 films. on one board a guy posted a pic of his room and mentioned he had around 1800 films : his collection proved his knowledge of films was great as he had tons of obscure european films on dvd ... cool.

I agree with some of the other posts as well. but jumping right to calling them thieves is hilarious. anybody with that kind of cash in the bank is nothing but a crackhead:lol:. stop it...yer killing me! guess my $4,700 in my "hobby account" is stolen money. of course...my new parachute is going to drain most of that right away.-eek-

Oh come on, you can just admit that it was you. ;)

I wouldn't agree that a collection of obscure films on DVD proves the owner is knowledgable about films. However, I do believe the inverse generally is true. A collection dominated by flavor-of-the-month blockbusters and mindless comedies tends to prove the owner is witless about films.

I also wouldn't consider a 200 DVD collection a cause for worry. There are plenty of people who know far more about film than you or I ever will who don't own any DVDs.

HotThang 07-20-04 07:33 PM

Could be sending them to our boys overseas. Where I work one of the first things they ask to be sent to them are videos/DVDs.

Eve Brown 07-20-04 09:17 PM

Interesting wish I could spend that in a single day for dvds, before I was buying on the internet I would go to media play or suncoast and spend about $100 every month during replay weekend. This was when I was 17 and had no other bills. I would never spend more then $20 for a dvd then but now I think thats too much for a single movie.

I can still imagine that huge stack of DVD's falling on Austin and him struggling to get out from under tham. It was league 20,000 DVDs under the sea.

That's why people should keep a vacumn cleaner, basketball, and a jar of preserves next to their DVD collection.

This is not true I have a dept card and I don't have to enter my pin number unless I tell the person I want to use it as a dept card. I know one thing don't forking use one at wal-mart a damn $2.50 fee comes with it.

PS. I got no idea how many dvd's I have I never bother to add the things up. I find it odd when folks post about how many dvd's they own. It's like running round trying to prove you're the biggest geek in the place full of other geeks.

I know if i managed to come across a large sum of money (lottery, large investment payoff, inheritence, etc...) i'd have a field day like that and wouldn't care so much about saving some money online.

Shap 07-21-04 12:02 PM

I'm guessing their DVDs were stolen and they received a big fat insurance check for them.

As to why they didn't order online.. anyone ever buy that many DVDs online and not have any problems whatsoever? Quite frankly, if I were buying that many, I *would* buy them at a store where I can ensure I receive every single DVD I pay for.

I'm not sure how the insurance thing works, but if your collection was stolen, wouldn't they reimburse you the MSRP of each DVD? In that case, they'd still be getting a better deal at Best Buy because they are still a lot cheaper than MSRP. They probably ended up with more DVDs than they had originally.

old ppl who are retired = lots of money.

The op said that they were asking each other if titles were good, which means that they had never seen that movie before.

My guess is that they were just starting their collection and were just buyin' lots of stuff.

Remember, money is all relative. $3,000 is a lot different to someone who makes $1,000,000 a year vs someone who makes say $30,000 a year.

To each his own, but that sounds silly to me. I spent over $2K last winter during DDD's 20%-off sale. With only a few weeks patience and a couple of brief calls, I got every title I ordered, saved hundreds of dollars over BB prices, and had a much wider selection of titles to choose from.

Which is exactly the kind of thinking that eventually leaves most lottery winners and heirs worse off than before their windfalls.

Is that really 20,000?? Did he actually have a count?

RevKarl 07-21-04 04:52 PM

Like gutwrencher suggested, my guess is that the couple in question just got a new HT system.

Actually, I'm more amazed at people who spend $5,000-$25,000 on custom home theater systems...and only have 10-25 dvds.

Yeah maybe he sould have not got a few and got himself some damn shelfs to put them on or a bigger house to put them in. I want to know has he wacthed them all and will he ever have the time. I find myself not wachting some of my old DVD's cause I was buying new ones to fast so I stoped buying them.

I doubt he's even had the time to check and make sure they all even play properly. There's just not enough time.

eau 07-22-04 02:18 AM

The most I witnessed was a couple buying $700+ worth of DVDs in one setting at BestBuy.
