On The Waterfront OAR?

When shown on TCM the film was letterboxed at 1:66.

The DVD is full frame but it also says that is the OAR.

Film was released in 1954 .

Given the date (I believe Cinemascope was first used in 54, but since this came out that year, it was probably filmed in 53) I'd say 1.37 is OAR.

1.37:1 according to imdb.com

Same Question - other Brando film ....

Streetcar Named Desire - I ordered this one (Original Director's Version) through Columbia House and it seems be foolscreen. It didn't say so at page for it online, and it doesn't mention it's aspect ratio on the case. When I started watching it the little "It's been adapted from it's original .. blah blah blah .. to fit on this screen" came up

So my question is: Do I have a OAR copy?

Streetcar is 1.37:1 according to IMDB (plus it's a 1951 release). So no need for sad face, looks like you have the OAR.

There's a bunch of movies with an incorrect "modified to fit your screen" banner, I just can't think of any right now.

BUT if TCM showed it 1:66, which is what some films were shot back then, then the DVD must be pan and scam! I am sorry, unless someone could verify fromt he filmmkaers estate, I am convinced the DVD is pan and scam! So I wount be buying this DVD if it is only foolscreen!

Not necessarily true. The current DVD release of "Jet Pilot" is framed at 1:85 - 1, yet the movie's principal photography was completed in 1949. The reason being is that when it was finally released in 1957, the distributors took part of the top and bottom image away, to make it fit onto the wider theater screen. So its possible TCM has a print of a re-release that has less picture info than the DVD release....
