OOP Criterions?

I was looking to buy the OOP versions of both Robocop and Silence of the Lambs. I was wondering was is a good price to pay for them? What do they usually go for? What are good places to look for them? And is there anything I should be leery of? What are the common scams?

you could always also keep checking your local shops or stores that sell used DVDs. this store, the wherehouse, in the mall near me, has a used copy of the Robocop Criteron for 35.99, but the condition is so so.

A good place to look for them (to avoid being scammed and get a decent price) is the DVDtalk exchange forum.

Joe1086 07-09-04 11:07 PM

I just won a bid on Silence of the Lambs on ebay for $36. Its brand new and sealed. Was it a good deal? I couldnt find it cheaper and I really wanted a sealed copy.

welb25 07-09-04 11:10 PM

I think retail on that disc was $39.99 so $36.00 is good.

drjay 07-09-04 11:11 PM

If you keep an eye open on the exchange forum you can snag SotL for $30. Robocop is more like $35 but you can get lucky sometimes.

Check out a pawn shop near you. People have found some rare stuff in mint condition in those pawn shops, for CHEAP.

I would actually get the Special Edition of Silence of the Lambs, and the Robosop Trilogy (Anamorphic)....

Yeah, Im aware that the quality on those two editions are better than the Criterions but I want the director's cut of Robocop, and I want the extras on the Criterion. And for some reason, I just want them as a collectible.

Why isnt The Unbearable Lightness of Being priced as high as other OOP copies?

because a lot of it were produced; and supply is more than the demand.

for the SOTL, make sure the cover has a butterfly and jodie foster face on the cover and not the anthony hopkins, the one w/ hopkins on the cover by himself is a bootleg version, i got scam a few years back on the SOTL CC.

the Robocop Trilogy i thought had the same exact cut as the Crit.
and collectible for yourself? it is widely known that DVD's do not make good investments, thus the Crits you are looking for you can get at MSRP or lower.

I think you got a good deal. Sure, you might've found a cheaper copy but that could've been 3 or 6 months later...and that would've been 3 or 6 months of not being able to have it.

As long as you don't mind paying $36 and you got exactly what you were looking for, then it's cool IMO.

BTW, the pic you posted looks like you got a legit copy. Congrats!

Is Hard Boiled really that good of a movie? It's one of the most expensive oop criterions, along with The Killer, of course

Well, it's definitely not as good as "The Killer", but remains among John Woo's very best.

Funny thing about the Criterion versions of both robocop and Silence is that their MGM counterparts rival them in everyway, and some claim to give MGM the edge (atleast with those releases). So save some money and buy the MGM versions.

rfduncan 07-10-04 04:52 PM

I just sold two sealed Ro bocop CC's on eBay. Thed sold for about $60 each.

jough 07-10-04 06:35 PM

The MGM SotL doesn't have the great commentary track, but it's other extras are better.

The transfer on the MGM is anamorphic, but it's a little softer than the Criterion.

As for Robocop, there's little to recommend the Criterion over the MGM, other than the spine number.

Rammsteinfan 07-10-04 06:52 PM

CC Robocop is also 1.66:1 which is Verhovens choice of ratio. MGM is 1.85:1

Jah-Wren Ryel 07-10-04 07:04 PM

There is a website dedicate to robocop. The guy compares the quality of the the Criterion versus the MGM and one other (R2?). The Criterion definitely has an inferior transfer compared to the MGM but, not only does it have the correct aspect ratio, it has a lot more picture on all four sides of the frame compared to the MGM release. It is as if MGM cropped ~10% off all the edges.

There is a comparison:

jough 07-12-04 03:37 PM

Is Criterion's commentary used on the MGM Robocob Trilogy disc, or is it a different commentary?

RagingBull80 07-12-04 05:04 PM

Robocop

The commentary on the trilogy version of ROBOCOP is different than the one on the Criterion edition of the DVD. Even though they are both the unrated version of the film the commentary on the Criterion version is exclusive to Criterion.

Paris 07-12-04 09:08 PM

I remember reading a review comparing the two SOTL dvds and it said the color was better on the Criterion, it was much more faithful to what the film looked like theatrically.

I have the Criterion version and have never compared the two.
