Jean Renoir's Picnic On The Grass...

Does anyone know of a rumor for this to be on DVD anytime soon? I'm guessing it was probably one of the titles KINO bought from Interama (along with Day In The Country). I know about the StudioCanal DVD, I'm specifically hoping to hear news about a subtitled version as the VHS is very expensive.

I had written Kino about their Renoir plans last year, but was told that they only had the VHS rights through Interama (and not the DVD rights).

I would be very surprised if Criterion doesn't hold the rights to Picnic on the Grass/Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (1959), but I've heard no rumors about a potential release in Region 1. I would expect them to continue to release most of Renoir's major films on DVD over the next few years (this year they've released The Rules of the Game/La Règle du jeu and The Lower Depths/Les Bas-fonds, and will be releasing a box set on August 3rd containing The Golden Coach/La Carrosse d'or, French Cancan, and Elena and Her Men/Elena et les hommes).

Worldwide, I'm aware of only the French release from Studio Canal. It is encoded for Region 2 PAL, and has no English subtitles.

Remember, Une Partie de compagne is available in the UK from BFI and Optimum have released Boudu Saved From Drowning

Next month Canal+ (thru Warner) will be releasing a Renoir boxset featuing Le Crime de Monsieur Lange, La Bete Humaine and La Grande Illusion.

hm...

I'm really looking forward to that box-set, mostly for the Crimes of Monsieur Lange and La Bete Humaine (not sure if the grand illusion will be worth buying as the Criterion version is more than adequate... we'll see). I'm also hoping for a good DVD of The River. Again, hopefully BFI or Criterion (or both...) will release Picnic on the Grass and/or The River. In any event, the influx of Renoir on DVD has only increased my appetite for his films. Thanks for the info.

StudioCanal in France has been releasing/repackaging (in the last month) some Renoir titles (inc 2 from the UK boxset) and they do have more extras than previous releases. No English subtitles AFAIK except for La Bête humaine (assuming it has the same transfer from its last release).

As for the Criterion La Grande Illusion I always thought the old French transfer from Film Office/StudioCanal was superior image-wise. It had no subtitles (English or French) and of course nothing extras-wise.

Will be interesting to see what the UK get.
