No. I would assume the Criterion Collection transfer is the better of the two. I haven't actually seen the other one though. Isn't it a case where the BV one was non-anamorphic, and the Criterion is enhanced? Regardless, the back of my Criterion says that it features a "New Widescreen Transfer, Supervised by Director Wes Anderson and Enhanced For Widescreen Televisions". I would assume that they're referring to the earlier version when they speak of a new transfer. Makes sense, no?

According to the excellent DVD Beaver, the Criterion Collection DVD is marginally sharper than the Touchstone/Buena Vista (the CC is anamorphically enhanced; the other is not). I've owned both, and would never part with the CC version due to the excellent extras.

I had both (got the original BV version for Christmas 1999 - less than a month before the Criterion came out - D'oh!) and quickly gave away the original for the Criterion.
I did like the cover of the BV version better, but I got over it pretty quickly with the Criterion's sharper anamorphic transfer, the commentary, and all of the fun extras. Those MTV Movie Awards shorts are hilarious, and the Charlie Rose interview is great.
