Anyone obsessed with collecting the best edition of every DVD in their collection?
I know double, triple or even quadruple dipping can be a pain. but i find myself helpless sometimes when it comes to the titles i really enjoy. i myself havent double dipped too many times because of reading into future release forecasts, but i try to get the best version of every film in my collection.
so far, the ones that are not the best version in my list are fast and furious(there exist tricked out edition), and several i havent upgraded to superbit: ie spiderman, legends of the fall, lawrence of arabia, badboys I, crouching tiger hidden dragon; the killer(obviously dont have the criterion), and everything else is pretty much the best version of the film available on dvd
Funds are short these days so when i decide if i want to purchase a superbit of a movie i already have i think i rather spend the money buying a new title.
But in the end, i think i still have an obsession with collecting the best version of all my movies. this is probably not a healthy habit on top of my already bad dvd addiction.

Not me. I'll upgrade if the A/V is greatly improved (o.e. Lawrence of Arabia) but not for more lame extras. I don't think the superbits are worth the $, personally, so I don't worry about that. I did upgrade Stargate since I had the flipper, and I'll upgrade Shawshank Redemption probably since it's a fav of mine, but otherwise I collect DVDs for the movies. If the DVD already looks good, I spend my money on a different movie rather than one I already have.

wow videophile u have 2100+ titles i guess this would be a harder task to do with that many titles, for my merely 300+ collection it's probably easier. I agree with you some movies dont deserve to be upgraded, i, e fast and furious.
reason i dont have that many movies is for two reasons, 1. financial limit (being a student and all) 2. daunting future of HDDVD replacements. (when HDDVD rolls around in a few years to replace DVDs eventually, the more dvds i have in my collection the more depressed i would probably become haha)

Nope, I'll happily upgrade for a large A/V improvement (e.g. anamorphic transfer, DTS, etc.) or director's cut, but that's it. Don't care about extras.

Not me. I did with Pulp Fiction and True Romance because I just HAD to. But there are several others I've let pass by -- Boogie Nights and Thelma and Louis come to mind. But now that I've got a widescreen TV, I might eventually replace a couple of my non-anamorphic discs if possible. But other than that, I now just go for the movie, screw the extra extras.

not obsessed with it, but if there is a movie I really like, its nice to have the best version out (a/v quality, sound, or extras)

No, I never double dip. Why give the studios more money. They need to learn to put out a good product the 1st time.
LotR DVDs are the only ones you could say I might have doubled on. But, the SE and EE are very different.

Obsessed? No, not really, but I do like a better version. Better as in letterbox to anamorphic (luckily I just have 2 DVDs that aren't anamorphic, and there aren't replacements), higher track sound mix, and extended cuts. That's just about it.
The one double-dip that I haven't made yet, but intend to sometime is the Underworld - UR DC.

No. But if the new verison has better Video/audio, uncut, and/or a long awaited commentary Then I will opt for the new version.
I would have to like the movie tremendously like Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas and Casino, all of which I plan to upgrade when available.

I usually always double dip on a title I already own. In fact, the only title I haven't rebought is The Fast & Furious: Tricked Out Edition, because I really think it's worth the upgrade from the Collector's Edition. Same goes with the new Spiderman Deluxe. It's the exact same disc I own now.

I'll upgrade when I see fit. obsessed? dude, I'm obsessed period, just when it comes to collecting films for my library. do I want the best version/presentation? of course...and regardless of how many times I have to dip on a title. it usually depends on how important or special the film itself is, to me. worthy extras? better transfer? if it needs replacing...I'll replace it.
or I could say....NO! I dont want the best edition....I want the crappiest one out there.

I tend to buy catalog titles very carefully - if there's a rumored special edition or the film's anniversary coming up, I'll just wait for that. I'm very patient when it comes to buying DVDs, so it usually all works out in the end.
Now, that being said, I'm right there with the A/V improvements for upgrades. However, I don't plan on upgrading my "The Thing" DVD come October. Unless Best Buy has some sort of nice "2 for $20" thing with another DVD I want.

Yeah I would like to have the best editions in my collection as well. Some films that I really like I'll double dip, others I just turn a painful blind eye one. Unforutnately I don't have the $ to keep up. It would just be nice if they got it right the first time

I'll do it if it's a substantial amount of new material or improved AV. I didn't dip on Spider-man, won't on the Bourne Identity, will on Goodfellas and Shawshank, ect.

Even if it means selling the DVD 6 months or more in some cases ahead of the new release so I can get a good deal selling it. That's happened with Saving Private Ryan, The Thing, Dune, The Abyss, Total Recall, Robotech, Resident Evil, Gladiator, Spiderman and Star Trek VII-IX. Obviously some of those still aren't out yet and some won't be out till next year but I've seen them enough to last me a while. I can always rent them if I'm I must see them.
Mostly it comes down to:
-Is my current version non-anamorphic?
If so then it's a definite buy, because of this my collection is 100% Anamoprhic/Full Frame.
-Does my current version have DTS?
-If so then it's almost a definite buy, it depends on if I it's an action/sci-fi film or not.
I don't really care about extras except if it's a movie I really love like Saving Private Ryan, Star Trek, Star Wars etc then I must have the definitive version.

No - for instance I got National Lampoon's Vacation and Blazing Saddles for free from the WB mail-in deal. I like the movies, but I wouldn't upgrade them.
I'm even on the fence about the STTNG films that Paramount seems to be upgrading. I'd consider First Contact if the A/V quality was MUCH improved, but the original was pretty decent IMO.

If it's a movie I absolutely love, and the additions are extensive, then I'll upgrade. But otherwise, I have too many new movies to get to worry about upgrading all my old ones. (And selling them off is too much of a hassle.)

It has to be a movie I dearly love. As it stands I usually wait for the double dip if I know it's coming. Perfect example is LOTR: ROTK. I dearly want to see it again, but I won't give New Line my money twice.

I ONLY upgrade on dvd's that include the exact same transfer, audio and extras except for new shorts promoting a new theatrical tie in.
So far I have The Fast and The Furious: Tricked Out Edition, American Pie: Beneath The Crust and I plan to double dip on the new Bourne Identity disc.
