I am a huge Robert De Niro fan and have been holding off these 3 films hoping that a special edition or something better would come out, so is anything being re-released? or should I just pick up the current versions?

I'd wait for Raging Bull. 25th anniversary is next year, and MGM has been releasing improved editions of some of their older films recently.
King of Comedy is a possibility; though not likely...its Fox, anyway, so there's even a very slim chance for a Criterion release (a perfect way for them to include some Scorsese shorts, like Italianamerican).
Deer Hunter is Universal...its a possibility, but the R2 disc seems like a fine bet if you're multi-regional.

DVD Talk Gold Edition
the deer hunter region 2 (it's a 2 disc with a bunch of features) is really cool.
they also have a special edition raging bull in the UK. It has some really good documentaries on it.

How come we don't get the same awesome sets here in the US? What's up with these studios releasing better versions of these films in the UK, Europe and Japan but net here? I also saw a nice 2 disc version of The Usual Suspects Reg 2, it's sucks that we don't get that here.

I guess it depends on what the holders of the DVD rights want to do with the product, not necessarily the studio. The R2 Deer Hunter, for example, has what they list as a "UK Exclusive" for the Cimino full-length commentary.Originally posted by ttzx

Another great UK release is the 2-disc The Hitcher, and there are a few John Carpenter commentaries (Starman, They Live that are alive and well in R2, but not in R1.
But yes, I agree, it is weird when U.S. movies get better treatment outside the U.S.

The Deer Hunter difference is an easy one to figure out. The UK set was put out by Warner Brothers, who apparently have an appreciation for great films and their home video customers. Universal has the US rights so I am not surprised that we are fresh out of luck in R1.
