DVD Collection Count
 

Hey, I am going to count my DVD's later because I am curious how many I got. But this might be tough because I have a lot of boxed sets and a few doubles and want an accurate total. So how do you guys count your collections. Like for example, the Simpsons season 3. It is 4 DISCS, so do you count it as 4 DVDS or 1? How bout THE GODFATHER SET? Do you count it as 5 DVDS since their is 5 DISCS, or 3 because 3 movies or 1 because 1 boxed set? Also, do you count doubles? Like i got a double of a few movies because they also came in box set.

Most count TITLES, not individual discs.

I count mine like DVD Aficionado does.

Movie titles & season titles.

All the bonus content for a movie belongs to that particular movie. All the episodes/bonus material of a particular season belongs to that season.

Another way to look at is would you buy all the bonus content without the movie or the episodes separate from one another? I wouldn't.

I think it's a matter of personal preference. Some folks count each disc, some just count the "main" feature discs.

Here's what I count:
TV season sets are one title.
Multiple-movie boxes, I count the movies but not the bonus, so the Godfather box is 3 for me.
Two-sided movies I count as a single title (i.e. The Fly/Fly II).

I guess you could say I'm on the minimalist side. I'm sure others are at the other extreme and count each disc, no matter it's contents.

you guys count that or no? like I own 2 scarface dvds (the same version)

I count a hybrid of cases and titles, mainly cases because that's what I physically count ;) So any of the 2 DVD special editions in 1 case count as 1, the Indian Jones counts as 4, but Alien Quadrilogy counts as 1. There are some exceptions such as the Bruce Lee collection because the list on my PDA has each title in the collection listed (so I don't accidentally repurchase something ;)), so that counts as 5, and each of the 5 Twilight Zone sets I just have listed as 1 since there is no reason to list out all the individual titles.. The bottom line is find a system that works for you and stick w/ it.

I only have 1 instance of the exact same DVD (Hard Boiled Criterion :D) but I only count it as 1. If I have 2 copies of the same movie (HK and US versions of something for instance, or a "upgraded" DVD) I'll count them as seperate.

I count like this:

TV sets are 1 title

Bonus discs doesnt count as a movie (allthough I have a few "counted" in DVD Profiler because I want the details of the disc)

If there is a DVD with 2 versions of the film, theatrical and director´s cut, that makes it 2 movies...also if I have different versions of a DVD, they only count as more if one is the theatrical and the other is director´s cut/extended...for example Terminator 2 which I have all 3 DVD versions of and therefore I count them as 3 movies...theatrical, director´s cut and extended director´s cut...
and then again, I "count" Alien Quadrilogy as one in DVD profiler, so I have to keep track of both the count in Profiler and the actual movie count...and yes, I get confused too sometimes :)

I count things I've bought. The Godfather set was one purchase, so it counts as one. Indy was one purchase, so it counts as one. Die Hard Trilogy was one purchase, so it counts as one. Had I picked up the three Die Hard movies seperately, that would count as three even though the box is the only difference. Alien Quadrilogy counts as 1 (even though it contains 9 discs and either 4 or 8 movies depending on how you count them :D).

Following that logic, it's obvious that Season 1 of Buffy counts as one, Season 5 of Babylon 5 counts as one, etc. I don't double dip (at least so far), but if I did, each would count as one. I can't imagine buying the exact same thing twice, so I've never thought about how I would count that.

In DVD Profiler, my collection numbers tell me how many things I've bought. I also add profiles for everything contained in a box set and leave the collection number blank. So the total number of profiles is roughly the amount of movies I have (minus the profiles for the box set and profiles for bonus discs).

That's how I do it. How you do it is totally up to you. Mainly because no one else really gives a hoot how many you have. Count what you're interested in. I like to know how many things I've bought. You may be more interested in how many shiny discs you have or how many movies you have or how many French movies you have or whatever. Once you decide what you're interested in counting, then you pretty much just go with the standard 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. until you reach the end. :D

That's exactly how I do it. For instance, I bought the three Austin Powers DVDs separately as each of them were released, so I counted them as three. Then when they rereleased the first two in keep cases, and Wal-Mart had the set of three mispriced, I bought it (and sold the old ones on eBay) so now I count it as one.

I count movies by individual title, thus if a single disc has two movies, it counts as two (does not apply to alternate versions of the same movie, i.e. fullscreen/widescreen), or if a two-disc release has one movie, it counts as one. Multiple releases (double dips) are each counted individually.

The Abbott & Costello sets are two discs, but count as eight because they contain eight movies. The reason I count this way is essentially because I keep a list of movies, not DVDs. It's the movie, not the medium.

Television is counted differently. I count them however they've been packaged as one - so if it's two discs, 3, 4, 5 or whatever in one package, it counts as one. But if there are multiple packages, each one counts as one (i.e. Avengers, Monty Python two-disc sets).

For movies I count titles: Alien Box Set (I still have the original) is 4 titles.

For double movie discs (ie. I have the EL Mariachi/Desperado flipper) I count it as 2 titles.

TV Series are 1 title per season set - South Park Season One or Band of Brothers would be 1 title each.

If I have two different versions of the same film, like I have Kill Bill Vol1 as R1 and the uncut import, I count those seperately.

Same thing with Silence of the Lambs, I have the Criterion and the studio version and count them seperately.

For box sets I count movies. Indy would be 3 as the 4th disc is an extra, and not available seperately. The 3 Colors Trilogy counts as 3 titles.

Things like the theatrical Lord of the Rings movies are 1 disc because the second disc is extras. Even the extended editions are counted as a single disc for me as it's just one movie.

But I count TV sets by the number of discs that have episodes on them. So the Friends sets are 4 discs in my counts. TV sets usually have over 2 hours of material per disc and it just doesn't seem right to equate a full TV season set's worth of material (anywhere from 10 to 16 hours of material) to a single 2 hour movie.

i can't understand how people count a box set with 3 individual movies in it like the Indiana Jone Trilogy as a count of 1! It is 3 separate movies and should count as 3 separate titles and count as 3 and that is that. Whether purchased together or pieced from eBay or something like that. Alien Quad is 9 discs, but 4 entirely separate movies, 8 actually if you count each version, but at least count them as 4! Counting them as 1 is totally short changing and just doesn't make sense in my opinion, but to each his/her own.

I like that DVDaf makes an attempt at distinguishing amount of titles and listings, but I count box sets as one personally...
although if I buy a set that doesn't come in a box, I count the titles individually (i.e. Austin Powers, Cirque: Dralion & Quidam, Best of the Muppets, Beavis & Butthead, etc.)... I do it this way because it doesn't really matter to me how many I have except for curiosity sake and I would rather undercount than overcount.
