Welcome to the forum! To answer your question, the 4-disc Extended Edition will most likely be released in the Fall of this year. There hasn't been an official announcement yet, but I'd expect one in the next few weeks...

There will be a 4-disc Extended Edition and a Gift Set (content unkown yet) of the ROTK ready for this holiday season. Actually, there is an insert in the 2-disc version promoting the EE and the Gift Set with a $5 or $10 rebate similar to the previous ones.

Video Business is reporting December:

"JUNE 8 | Departing from tradition, New Line Cinema is releasing the extended edition DVD of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in December.

That falls outside of the holiday shopping primetime of mid-November--when the past two deluxe versions of the series, LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring and LOTR: The Two Towers, hit stores.

Still, New Line sources say the switch will not necessarily hurt sales. Consumers have been aware for months about an upcoming extended take on Return of the King, given the bows of ones for Fellowship and Two Towers. Its December rollout will simply compress buying into a shorter window, sources explain.

Of course, the bigger picture, they admit, is that the bulk of LOTR DVD revenues stem from New Line's theatrical version-only titles. And Return of the King's is off to a fast gallop (VB, May 31).

Return of the King's extended edition took longer to produce because cast members, now filming new projects, had to be rounded up from all over to complete their commentaries"

I was disappointed when they announced the EE would be coming out in November rather than August. Now it's even later? Damn.

I don't care if they are releasing the EE in Nov or December, they gotta let us know what will be in the gift set NOW :p

Jackskeleton 06-09-04 05:11 AM

why? it would just be torture. :p

The delay is a bummer, but if it allows for a more satisfying experience in the end, then I could care less.

digital bits is reporting some info on the extras, most of it is already out there:

"...Entertainment Weekly magazine posted a short blurb in their June 19th issue about what we can expect on the forthcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Special Extended DVD Edition (which arrives in December - street date TBA). Look for the film to be a whopping 49 minute longer, complete with more than 300 new FX shots completed just for this release. Among the new scenes you'll see will be Gandalf facing down the Witch King at Minas Tirith, the Mouth of Sauron taunting Aragorn and company at the Black Gates, Aragorn tending to Eowyn at the House of Healing, and Gandalf's final confrontation with the wizard Saruman. You'll also get more audio commentaries from everyone involved, two discs worth of exclusive, in-depth documentaries and (we've heard) a pretty funny Easter egg or two. Look for the 4-disc set's faux leather slipcase to be blue. We'll post further details as they become available."

ROTK Street Date: December 14th?
6/28/04, 1:02 pm EST - Xoanon

Sarah writes: I was looking through my company's intranet the other day, looking at upcoming DVD street dates, when lo and behold, it had a street date of December 14 listed for the ROTK:EE. Now, the title has not been catalogued yet, so things could still change, but it's the first time I've seen an actual date listed for it.
Seems kind of late if it is indeed the 14th of December...

i wonder why they weren't doing the commentaries sooner. i wonder if that's something they wait till the last minute to do.

SunMonkey 06-29-04 01:23 AM

I couldn't find a trailer for the extended edition on the current RotK DVD as had been on the previous two theatrical releases, and wondered why. I guess this delay news is why.

Well, they've got to at least wait until they have an edited version of the extended film to watch while they talk about it. And now that the movies are all done, it's harder to get everyone together for stuff like that and the documentary filming.
