Are you caught up on your DVD spending?

I saw a board that checked what is the stat on viewing your DVDs that you own. I want to know how many people are caught up buying all the DVDs they want or are struggling to even try and get 1 or 2 buys a month?

For me -
It has been rough with me becuase the last 4 years I have been unemployed but I just got hired at Walmart so hopefully I can eventually be in the middle instead of the bottom of my collecting. Right now I have about 59 DVDs, however I am collecting only Shows for like a year. So I have 59 DVDs and about 900 in my Wishlist. Take a guess at where I think I stand lol.

For the most part at this point I'm only buying new stuff so I guess I can say I'm "caught up".

Austin won't be done until he owns at least one of every DVD ever made. I mean, DVD's are like Pokemon, gotta catch em all ;)

im the type of person who has to convince himself over a course of months to buy a dvd (or anything i want). i rarely buy things i want. i dont konw why but im not a "spender"...im a "saver".

eventually after months of just saying "comeon...go get it" ill force myself to make a CH order. thatll often be my dvd buying for sometimes up to half a year, minus the one or two MUST HAVE ALL TIME GREAT DVDS THAT I LOVE, that i will also buy on release day.

on this board, i read about people buying more dvds in one day than i do in a year. i have the cash but i just cant make myself buy dvds like i want to. does it drive me nuts? nah. im used to it - its just how i am. do i wish i would buy more? yes.

right now i have like 100 or so dvds (3-4 years of collecting) and about 20 or so on my want list (which only includes dvds i really want...not "wouldnt mind having").

Cedrock 05-29-04 10:32 PM

Im at 162 dvds now (collecting 2 yrs)was at 70 last november, lets say i had liek 40 free ones or so in 2 months.... But ive been unemployed since january and got like 50 dvds since. I buy them all the time now, whenever i get $ i look for dvds, nothing else its like an addiction. I keep telling myself I want to finish off my collection and i make like a list of dvds (10-20 dvds) I'll buy like 7 then rewrite the list but add 10, to 15 or have a higher original number haha. Anyone else cant stop buying?(Also ebay kills me having ebay as homepage=dvd obsession)

atari2600 05-29-04 10:35 PM

40 free ones? HOW?

antennaball 05-29-04 11:02 PM

Not even close. Between my wife and I, our wish list is around 500.

gutwrencher 05-29-04 11:07 PM

I'm building my perfect library of films, and at 1,587 titles...I've got a long way to go...even at 10 or so a week. based on my "needed" and "most wanted" lists...I'll top off around 2,000 titles...maybe a little more. I'm gettin' there.

DeanoBKN 05-30-04 01:19 AM

I'm glad to say I'm just about caught up. WOOHOO!!!!

PwA 05-30-04 01:23 AM

im at 140 dvds started collecting end of jan 2004, im nearing my target and have slowed my buying down dramatically

i have about 15 dvds on my want list, but june is going to break the bank with all the new releases!!

PwA.

chanster 05-30-04 02:11 AM

Here's an idea. Spend your money on something else.

Apone 05-30-04 02:49 AM

¡°I am about half-way there¡±. I got 7 DVDs and waiting for 4 others. I got the loot but not the availability. Ah yes, such big world I live in but only need so few out of it.

4 MORE!! MUWHAHAHAHAHA!! :D

NEUMANN 05-30-04 07:18 AM

I have a little over 600 dvd's and could easily think of over 1,000 more that i would like to have

QuiGonJosh 05-30-04 07:27 AM

I've sold off over 500 discs...whats that tell ya?

mzupeman2 05-30-04 07:57 AM

I'm up near 500 for my collection and I'm buying DVD's every week. There's always stuff added to my list, and whatever I can't afford that week, gets left behind on a wish list. Really makes me upset during the really busy DVD seasons (summer, late fall) because there's so much to want.... with more and more shows coming on DVD, it's tough to keep buying when you're constantly buying sets that are at least 35-40 dollars. Then there's the new movies that keep coming out on top of that.

speedyray 05-30-04 08:00 AM

Every time I think I am getting close, I see some more stuff to add. I will never be caught up, but my catalog is getting nice at around 700 movies plus lots of TV.

peterjon 05-30-04 09:22 AM

all i have to do now is order a few movies a year and thats it :) I got all i want,...the classics..the must haves...phffff

and it only took me a 4 years to do it....:(

Calistoga 05-30-04 10:13 AM

I am pretty much caught up, but seems there is always the occasional movie I forgot about. Of course, the future will always bring more. Gotta love this addiction. :p

Cedrock 05-30-04 11:28 AM

500dvds, 1587dvd? Wow you guys are like personal blockbusters. I could never break 300 for at least 5 yrs (thats all depending on future dvd releases) I just get movies id watch randomly, or more than once, not like a once a yr or so movie. 1587 is crazy but ill give you props , where do you guys keep all these things because I know one case cant hold em all. You need to get me a job where you work so I can afford that much hehe {BTW If anyone lives around here (Philadelphia/New Jersey) There a good spot to get new ORIGINAL dvds not dvdrs or imports. Its Tacony Palymyra Flea Market ive been going there starting in JAnuary theres brand new releases from previous week only $11-$13 sealed depending on seller}

asianxcore 05-30-04 11:43 AM

not even close :) haha

Hiro11 05-30-04 11:46 AM

I find myself leaving Borders without buying anything... I have almost all of the catalogue releases I want, I'm only buying new or rereleases at this point.

Well, with my collection at about 500 (would be more but I have returned a bunch I didn't need anymore due to some box set releases or whatnot), it's nothing too amazing. I'm extremely happy with my collection. But I just been buying dvd's every week for like, four or five years. And I have a normal paying job, with full time hours. Like 8.50 an hour right now. So, nothing too extreme. But I am buying dvd's pretty much every week with the extra money I have after I need to pay for bills and stuff. Some weeks I'll spend like 20 bucks, there's definitely times where I'll spend up near 100. It's just an addiction, I was the same way as I was growing up too. Feel bad for my parents. I was huge into movies and everything. It's a hobby. An addiction. So there's other factors behind it. I mean, what else is better to do while sitting home after work when you're bored, than watch a movie or watch some TV on DVD? Some people see such a big collection as a waste of money... I see it is a good investment. I watch movies at will, and watch movies again and again. My collection will always be handy.

HistoryProf 05-30-04 12:22 PM

not even close....i have about 250 right now, after selling about 75 a couple of months ago....with about 200 still on my wishlist. a wishlist that never ever ever drops below 150 no matter how many i get...there's just so much other stuff coming out all the time. And i'm pretty broke right now so i haven't been able to keep up with new stuff at all this year....but they aren't going anywhere, so i'm not too worried.

;)

As someone who didn't start watching movies very often until I turned 19 or 20 I have A LOT that I haven't seen. DVDs have me spoiled so I won't watch a film on TV at all. Most of the films I own are from the 90's and 2000's since I grew up on them. I finally have most of those that I want but still have a quite a bit I need to see based on reviews and such. My last CH order consisted of 4 films from the 50's & 60's. One of those being Rear Window. What a great film. My goal is to check out older films along with foreign films that are highly regarded then move on to lesser known films. For every great film I come across like Rear Window or Lawrence of Arabia there is a clunker like Animal House.

I got over 200 and I'm not even close, every day I find a new title that I want to own!

Gcomeau 05-30-04 02:41 PM

I need to get another storage cabinet before i go crazy(never enough $$ though). I'm at about 230(but probably closer to 300) i guess - i haven't counted since a year ago when i counted just over 150.

No way, every time I go to look for one title I see 5 more I want to buy :)

Puggie McPugPug 05-31-04 01:06 AM

I'm pretty much done buying DVDs aside from new releases.

I also have a very strict policy about what I buy. I used to buy anything, but now I won't blind buy a single thing. I know I may catch flack for this, but I will download something, watch it, and if I liked it enough, buy it. If not, I feel justified in not wasting my money.

If there is a movie I do want, the DVD also has to be worth it. Case in point, I already own the original "Das Boot" DVD. They are releasing the 2 disc tv mini-series release this week, but from what I've read, I'm basically taking a crappy quality print, crappier remaster audio, and sacrificing the audio commentary AND spending $30 bucks for another cut of the film.

After some thinking, I decided it's a waste of money to pay $30 for an inferior DVD of what I have now and hope they fix it.

I'll always have hundreds, if not thousands of DVDs I'd love to own, but I realize unless I win the lottery, I keep it limited to only DVDs I really want.

That's why you won't see Kill Bill in my collection until they put out the uncut editions in a SE form.

OREOSpeedwagon 05-31-04 01:17 AM

Gah Puggie, thanks for reminding me I still need to buy the Das Boot Director's Cut the next time I'm at Walmart :D

If it's any consolation, I doubt they'll have it. :)

I only go to Walmart for the really, really popular DVDs pretty much everyone (Circuit City, Target, Best Buy, etc) will advertise.

Trying to get help out of a Walmart employee is an effort in futility. If it's not on the shelf, you'd have better luck asking a blind man what something looks like than getting a Walmart employee to help you find it.

Nah they do, I just saw it today ($10, not bad I guess). The Walmart here has a pretty good selection and all the new releases are 50/50 FS and WS. I can't really complain though because it's the only place within 40 miles to get DVDs =/

The employees are still dumb here too though :D

Except for new releases I have all I want..
