Sherlock Holmes Box Set (UK) vs US releases question

I am contemplating getting the SH Box Set (Jeremy Brett) from UK since it contains all 41 episodes.

I can only find the Adventures of SH, Return of SH and the 5 movies in region 1. I somehow doubt that the remaining episodes would be released, but does anyone know for certain? Here is a link to the UK Boxset. The only reason I am hestitating is that I don't have a region free player and can only watch it on my comp.

Not an acceptable reason!

Seriously, with several reliable region-free players under $100, you really need to make the leap. There are several threads in the International Forum that suggest and discuss various players. Once you go region-free, you'll winder why you waited so long!

And incidentally, the prices that you see on amazon.uk get reduced for shipping to the U.S> because the 17% VAT (tax) that is included in the price gets removed.

MPI has currently released the following in Region 1:

01: The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes Boxed Set Collection (13 episodes)
02: The Sherlock Holmes Feature Film Collection (5episodes)
03: The Return Of Sherlock Holmes DVD Collection (11 episodes)

MPI has announced that they will be releasing both of the following before the end of the year:

04: The Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes (6 episodes)
05: The Casebook Of Sherlock Holmes (6 episodes)

Be patient. The remaining 12 are indeed coming to Region 1 DVD.

By the way, MPI has also released all 14 Basil Rathbone Holmes films as restored by UCLA on DVD.

Great! Thanks for the info. I think I will wait for the Region 1 release then. I know not having a region free dvd player is a lame excuse but my budget is tight so I rather spend the $$ on dvds But I do appreciate the comments tho!

It is not a lame excuse. I only buy Region 1 DVD's because I do not want to get sucked into the habit of purchasing expensive imported product. That is a perfectly rational decision.

Not all imports are expensive..... many are in the same price range as R1, even with shipping costs, and there are about half a dozen titles I've imported because they were substantially cheaper than the R1 release, not mention many titles that are comparably priced but have extras not available on R1.
It's simply a question of being a smart shopper.

Imports are almost always going to be more expensive. There may be exceptions to this rule, but not many. In addition, shipping costs will also be expensive if ordering from overseas. I understand that there are advantages to certain foreign DVD's. That is why people buy them. However, most of those people are not overly concerned about money.

Well, since you previously said you don't even buy non R1 DVDs...

....I guess I'll have to bow to the benefit of your experience, and assume that the several dozen items I've imported for less than $10 each shipped are simply figments of my imagination.

Why not just post the URL's to the site you order from so we can see what the prices are for ourselves? I think that would be more effective than sarcasm.

I think a lot of it depends upon where you import from. Most things I've picked up from HK/Asia (legit DVDs not bootlegs) have been cheaper than their US counterparts (sometimes for the same DVD due to the mark up HK importers tack on). I've occasionally been able to get things cheaper from Amazon.canada than from Amazon.us for the same DVDs as well. However that isn't always the case and frequently things do cost more (from Amazon.ca and Amazon.uk, the only other ones I have experience w/). About the only time I use any of the UK etailers is when there isn't going to be a R1 equivalent easily found (the Hong Kong Legends DVDs come to mind) which is why it's good to hear that the rest of the Brett/Holmes are going to be coming to R1 (getting back to the original subject). Although that book set is kind of tempting

Sarcasm is sometimes necessary in the face of obstinance

There is no one single site that I use to order, and nowhere did I sugeest that, so your demand for the URL is spurious at best. I order from dddhouse and dvdshelf, 2 legitimate HKetailers, and have placed many order with them that result in an averge cost of well under $10 per disc inbcluding shpping - in factm several orders of 5 DVDs each have cost be less than $30 for the entire order. From amazon.uk I purchased the 3-disc Karate Kid set for less than $25 shipped - that's less than $10 per DVD. From ezydvd in Australia I recenty received the two-dics Mountbatten set and the Paul Robson bio Here I Stand - the total for THAT order was less than $18.00. Im March, I received an order from hmv.co.uk that included Doctor In the House, Doctor At Sea, Moonstruck (WS), AFrican Queen, Suddenly (restored, WS), Make Mine Mink, the 3 St Trinians comedies, Odd Man out and a concert disc - 11 DVDs for a total of GBP53 including shipping - $10 a DVD.

Don't call me a liar based on your lack of expertise in international shopping.

End of conversation.

I never called you a liar. I called you sarcastic, which you have admitted. Further, Based on the following:

http://www2.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/navigat...1&pPageID=1085

Pricing

All charges are in U.K. Pounds.

All out of country orders will be charged in their respective currencies based on current exchange rates. Payment will only be taken from your card on despatch of your order If we part ship your order, rest assured we will not charge you any additional delivery costs.

For details of delivery charges check the "delivery details" section.

All prices on hmv.co.uk are for on-line purchases only and may differ from HMV Stores.

Prices are subject to change without notice.
Based on the current exchange rate of 1 British pound equaling aproximately $1.83, this would make a ten pound purchase cost $18.30. Note that this does not include shipping costs from the HMV site. Presumably you must be ordering items which are listed at five pounds or less to get that $10.00 figure. You also are not factoring in shipping. I cite this:

http://www2.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/navigat...1&pPageID=1077

Delivery Costs

Your delivery charge will be based on the standard charge for the format, and the unit charge for each item ordered. Be aware that if you choose different formats, you will be charged the higher standard charge for the order.

For example, if you order a CD and a video, and select the Complete Shipment option, delivery by First Class, you will be charged the standard charge for the video of £1.30, the unit price for the video of £0.50, and the unit price for a CD of £0.30, totalling £2.10.

If you choose Immediate Shipment, you will be quoted the standard charge for the video of £1.30, the unit charge for the video of £0.50, the standard charge for the CD of £0.70 and the unit charge for the CD of £0.30, totalling £2.80. This represents the 'worst case' scenario for this order. Your actual postage and packing charge for this option will be dependent on the number of times we have to ship your order.
This seems pretty expensive to me.

OMG ... I give specific details of a recent order that came in at GBP53 for 11 DVDs INCLUDING shipping, as a way of explaining that it is indeed possible to import titles for less than $10 each, cited several other examples, and the only response is to quote lengthy sections of a site's shipping rates.

I give up. My communication skills are obviously not up to the task. You want to believe that it's always expensive to import DVDs, you believe that. Make it your mantra. Meanwhile, I have some DVDs to watch.....

I did much more than that. I cited the exchange rate at a site which you named as well as the shipping charges. I also demonstrated that it would be hard to order any film from that site for $10.00. Instead of addressing my facts, you try to evade them. That says it all.

Give it a rest. I have dozens of DVDs I have imported for less than $10 each INCLUDING shipping (and I've provided specific exampls which your blind eye has chosen not to see), and you don't believe me. I really don't give a damn if you believe me or not -the only reason I ever responsded to your post in the first place is so that people would not be mislead to believe that all imports are necessarily expensive.

If you wish to continue this conversation in an emai, free to do so - there is no reason for you to continue displaying your lack of understanding in a publci forum.

I will not respond to any more of your posts .... so if you want to continue casting doubts on the veracity of my statements AND have the last word, go to it.

Live, be well, and don't spend your money on expensive imports.

You still have not addressed any of the facts which I presented proving that you cannot do so. You have effectively surrendered the argument.
