I don't mind the brushed steel cover art. It's classy, which is what this series is. I can't believe the gifts. Except for the script, they're all pretty stupid. I'd take the Bobbles or cards if they were included free, but no way I'd pay $30 more for them. Wouldn't pay that much for the script either. Unless they change something or add more, I'll just buy them separately.

This is awesome. Seinfeld is easily my favorite show of all time. I've been purposely not watching it in syndication because I'm waiting for the DVD release.

I happened to watch the last half of an episode last night. The one where Jerry's crazy friend sells him the huge van and Elaine was dating 'The Wiz'. I laughed just as hard as I did 8 years ago when it first came out. Seinfeld is a classic that will stand the test of time.

I'll defintely be picking up the gift set. As far as the gift, I'd pick the bobbleheads. I think it would be worth $30 for a bobblehead of all 4 characters.

I don't get the hatred for the cover art. It looks simple and nice. I like the head shots one or the one in which they're standing. I don't like the one with them sitting at a table. The extra items are not that great. Personally I don't realy care about the script. How many times are you gonna look at that thing? I'd rather have the bobble heads.

Still, bring it on.

^^ But there is nowhere to go from those covers from season to season. Each one will be completely different. I need a little consistency from season to season. Those just look like they pulled some random artwork and slapped it on there. Plain and simple. No thought behind it at all.

And for $30 more for the script, they better be limited and have at least one authentic autograph on it.

Was that for real? I couldn't believe that a major studio would have made any of those four cheaply photoshopped covers, and then when I got to the extras... um, what?

They should include some extra DVD content in a set like that, or something useful like the script or a Seinfeld episode guide book, or a Seinfeld trivia book or something. But for $30? Yikes.

You can still get Season 3 without getting the box, right? Please tell me that the box set isn't the only way to get season 3.

Great news! Any idea on when they'll be out in the UK?

S3 will be available separately.

I'm with you Jough, I'm out on the boxset.

I'll save my final analysis until I see the actual contents of the set, but if one of those options is going to be the actual item, then fuggetaboutit.

1. It's a sitcom.
2. It's not very visually artistic.
3. Have you seen the covers for other sitcoms? The Office?Probably not.
4. Honestly, please tell what would you do with it, the cover I mean?

It's a sitcom about people sitting in apartment and hanging out at a coffee shop!!! What the hell do you people want. I know this is the internet and whinning is considered the norm, but Jesus Christ almighty. -ohbfrank-

majorjoe23 06-02-04 03:53 PM

So wait, the first three seasons will be released at the same time? That's awesome and bank-breaking.

So? Friends is a sitcom. Frasier and Cheers are sitcoms. None of their covers look like crap.

2. It's not very visually artistic.
No kidding. That's why we're complaining.

3. Have you seen the covers for other sitcoms?
Yes.

The Office? Probably not.
Yes, I have both seasons of The Office. They look great.

There's a difference between minimalist and "crap."

Besides not make it look like something someone photoshopped in ten minutes?

I'll work up a Photoshop cover in ten minutes and post it later. I'm sure I can do better, but I'll let the other board members decide.

In any case, the packaging is endemic of a larger problem. When marketing has too tight a control on something creative, you tend to get art that looks like it was made by a marketer instead of an artist.

If the cover art sucks, chances are the same person makes decisions about other aspects of the set. Will the transfers and extra material follow suit?

Remember how bad the cover for the Larry Sanders show was? Notice how great the packaging is for Futurama and The Simpsons. Now compare the quality of the discs' content.

Any questions?

It's a sitcom about people sitting in apartment and hanging out at a coffee shop!!!
And, that means that the cover art, transfer, special features, and box set extra have to suck?

If you don't like the show, just say so. People who do like the show and are thinking of buying the set want it to be as good as it can possibly be. Since the details are still being worked out, our discussion of pretty much every aspect of the set has a chance of finding the right ears and making a difference in its production.

So this is pointless... how?

DVD Josh 06-02-04 04:44 PM

Jough, what's funny to me about cover art is all you see on the shelf is the spine :)

jough 06-02-04 05:13 PM

Not on my shelf. I face all of my discs out, so the covers are showing.

atari2600 06-02-04 05:24 PM

the problem with the covers isnt that they are so simple - its the fact that they look like some kid made them with some crappy art program. seinfeld deserves a QUALITY grade A cover. it can be simple and look good at the same time.

nodeerforamonth 06-02-04 05:42 PM

it's just a cover, folks.

Can we complain about more important things like inserts?

RichardW 06-02-04 06:07 PM

Anyone have any of the covers downloaded? I clicked on the survey link, but it says it's over. :(

astvilla99 06-02-04 10:41 PM

how long will it be before all 9 seasons are out

Gizmo 06-03-04 01:24 AM

Gift set for me. I hope they choose either the Bobble Heads or the Ketchup/Mustard combo.

The difference? Have those other sitcoms raked in billions of dollars? I think they can let loose of a few $$ and pay someone to come up with somehthing better than those.
