They Still love VHS. I'm sure they love Fullscreen, Pan and Scan, and Snappers too.

Pathetic. Truly Pathetic. -ohbfrank-

The guy who created this add should be shot. :johnwoo:

Wow, I would have never thought a major studio would still spend money on VHS ads. You learn something new everyday.

JustInsane 05-12-04 05:58 PM

I guess they need to clean out their stockrooms some how.

ukywyldcat 05-12-04 06:00 PM

That is what I was thinking...are they sitting on stockpiles of these videos? Or are they required to buy them back from distributors? Or are they squeezing the heck out of videotape manufacturers and getting supplies at remarkable bargains, making it still a very profitable enterprise? Perhaps the losses on videotape sales create some lucrative tax write-offs. Who knows?

There must be some financial reason behind this bizarre strategy.

TomOpus 05-12-04 06:03 PM

Maybe they've been receiving letters from DVD holdouts saying "I don't have a DVD player and I can't find VHS anymore... Help!"

Cornelius1047 05-12-04 06:28 PM

They love VHS so much that they still show 2 DVDs in their ad for VHS.

Is that Cheaper by the dozen copy the DVD? Or does that VHS also come in the big boxes that Disney used to use?

Also, this get's me thinking. When was the last time you saw VHS in the stores? I hadn't even noticed it-- except for at the grocery store and the occaisonal LOTR type movie-- leaving. Seems kind of strange now.

I thought the same, but I believe Ice Age is in a clamshell case. Don't know about Cheaper By The Dozen.

Actually, this is one of those ideas so good that it is bad. Meaning, somebody at FOX decided that since retailers are dumping VHS (Circuit City hasn't for over a year, Best Buy recently jumped off, and Blockbuster just announced it) that they have finally knocked out the middleman (a move Disney has been trying for years) and could reap a whirlwind of profits by charging retail and pocketing the whole thing!

However, this same moron didn't stop to look at demographics and find out that people who are still on the VHS bandwagon (there are more than we give credit for) typically are NOT internet shoppers!

illennium 05-12-04 07:23 PM

What's wrong with VHS?

Scott27 05-12-04 08:25 PM

The Cheaper by the Dozen VHS does come in a clamshell case - we sell them at the store where I work.

jkester 05-12-04 08:45 PM

Cornelius1047 05-12-04 10:05 PM

Yeah, I figured they were clamshells. Still look like DVDs to me. I've all but disowned VHS. I guess that's why I still see DVD.

At the end of a product's lifecycle, as more and more companies exit the market, it's usually hugely profitable to do exactly what you described. You just have to know when to get out, because someone's going to be left holding the bag and you don't want it to be you.

Jackskeleton 05-13-04 01:07 AM

Well they need to get rid of them one way or another

Reminds me of the "buggy whip" speech in Other People's Money.

You want someone to justify that with an answer. If I can not find it on DVD or Laserdisc and I really have to or want to see it, I will painfully watch a VHS on my 6 head Toshiba that gets used about 3 times a year.

RockyMtnBri 05-14-04 10:46 AM

speedyray...

I had to do that with Raiders a few years ago. Fortunately, when I need a Star Wars (original trilogy) fix, I've still got my Definitive Collection LDs! Other than that, my VCR gets no use at all - two DirecTiVos killed it!
