I heard that this show takes awhile to get into, but it worth the wait. Any truth to that?

It's about time!

Add this to [b]Homicide and The Corner in your collection and you've got the best Baltimore dramas ever made.

Long live Charm City - "The City That Reads"!!!

Cool news

I agree, it's a slow starter, but sucks you in the deeper you get into the series.

Good blind buy?

What is this show most comparable to? Homicide? The Shield?

As a native Baltimorean and huge fan of Homicide, I have every season of Homicide released so far (and plan to continue to collect them up through Andre Braugher's last season).

Comparable to none of those, really. It manages to containt the tautness of French Connection (or, if you watch much BBC, Prime Suspect). For my money, one of the best shows ever on TV.

Oh, I've befriended the actor who plays Bubs. I run into him on the street all of the time, and we've starting talking. Very nice guy. He told me a couple of months ago that the first season would be out in August or September. Glad it's confirmed from somewhere else as well.

The vibe is rather similar to Homicide in it's disdainful view of burecracy, careerism and corruption among public officials. A lot of the people in the BPD and in the DA's office come off like Gaffney, Barnfather and Harris, from Homicide.

It's different in it's structure and emphasis, in that it concentrates on both sides of the law. The rich characterization, intricate plotting, brutally realistic dialogue and overall level of verisimilitude that marked Homicide as far and away the best show of it's era are all present in The Wire, which I personally consider the best show on TV (an amoeba's width better than The Shield.)

Nice. Bubs is prolly my favorite character on the show besides McNutty.
