Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction
 

Hi, I'm both new to this site and the DVD format in general and it's been great so far, DVD Talk has lots of helpful information and interesting discussions in general. :)

Hmm...since this is my first thread, I figured it might be a good idea to ask about 2 of my faovrite movies, namely Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I know http://www.dvdcompare.net/ is a good site for DVD comparisons, but from what I see, there seems to be certain drawbacks to even the "best" version out there like missing dialogue in Reservoir Dogs and as for Pulp Fiction, although it's a draw between the R2 French CE and the R1 CE, I came across a thread in another forum about the R2 Japanese version having the best picture quality (comparison shots provided between the R1 and R2 Japan version were almost night and day!), so I'm still undecided.

So..are there going to be re-releases of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction in the near future? If not, I'd appreciate it if you guys can shed some light on which version to get for both films, thanks for your time. :)

Get the R1 special editions. They're both great DVDs, you won't be disappointed.

I'd have to agree with Tarantino. You'll end up with the most bang for the buck by sticking with these.

Buy the R1 special editions.

can't go wrong with R1 this time around.

The color is very washed out on the Reservoir Dogs SE so get the original single disc version for the much improved color. As for Pulp Fiction you can't go wrong with the SE.

Wait for Kill Bill 2 to come out on DVD and I'm sure there will be a bunch of deals for all of his movies like when KB1 came out.

Thanks for your replies guys, seems like the general consensus is to go for the R1 SE versions...however, it seems that the people over at AVSForum thinks otherwise for Pulp Fiction, they did a compare and came up with this:

The R2 Japanese version seems to have much better clarity and picture quality than the R1 version...hmm I dunno, but I hope I'm not breaking any rules by linking to other forums...just wanna ask for opinions and stuff. :)

R1 does look a tad softer but the color seems to be more natural.

I guess it depends on what you'd like more.

I haven't seen it, but supposedly the R3 Korean disc of Pulp Fiction has the best picture. Oh well, my R1 SE will be good enough for me until there is an HD DVD version someday.

That pic of a Japanese Disc also has more picture information (if it is real).... look specifically to the left side of the picture at the booth and on the right there is a pole that is not visible in the above R1 screenshot. Interesting...

However, on the AVS forum , the poster captioned with, " Following is a comparison of a frame from the special edition released in the US and about the same frame from the R2 Japanese disc that was released ..."

There is now a UK R2 SE of Reservoir dogs, apparently it has better contrast than the R1 and a softer picture eliminating the awful edge enhancement.

Does it have better contrast or is it "softer" (meaning the contrast is low)?

Does it have edge enhancement or is it sharper?

Soft = Low Contrast
Sharp = No edge enhancement

R1 Pulp Fiction looks and sounds great. Supplements are mediocre at best

R1 Reservoir Dogs looks like crap. The supplements are A++ so it is still worth picking up but it looks awful. The color is wrong and it is often misframed. Total suck.

It's not that a sharper picture eliminates EE, it's that an image with lots of EE can't be sharp.
