Warner's August 10th horror...
They are:
Dead Ringer (w/commentary and two featurettes) The Bad Seed (w/commentary and one featurette) Village of the Damned/Children of the Damned double-bill (both w/commentaries) Freaks (David Skal commentary, 3 alternative endings, a documentary, and a rare opening prologue) Freaks and the Damned DB interests me and it is extremely awesome seeing xtras. Good job Warner! I guess the three biggies left, catalogue wise, for Warner are King Kong, Mighty Joe Young, and Curse of the Werewolf. Personally, King Kong should be in their next 2-disc batch, and Joe should be a doublebill with son of Kong-both with commentaries. Curse is the most notable omission in the Hammer lineup for some reason it is just MIA on DVD. I don't know if Warner has the rights or not, but out of all the Hammers they released, you would have liked/hoped/thought that Horror of Dracula and Curse of Frankenstein would have some features. Oh well, fall horror is looking great. |
thank god, freaks is finally comin out. hope its half way restored. the version that plays on tcm, it is hard to understand sometimes what the characters were saying.
|
Oh yeah, BTW, I got this info from dvdfile.com, and they said all new remastered transfers on all titles. :)
|
Wow, I thought these weren't coming out until October. Great news!
More info about the extras here. I'm definitely getting Village of the Damned/Children of the Damned, and I may pick up The Bad Seed and Dead Ringer as well, for the Charles Busch (!) commentaries. Thanks for posting this! Rob |
Warners is really getting with the program! All 4 releases are must-haves for me, and the bonus material looks great!
|
Finally, Freaks will be mine!!!
|
Shame studios like Paramount and Columbia Tri-Star aren't getting it.

Curse of the Werewolf is a Universal title.
When it will finally come out, who knows. Universal's treatment of their classic monster titles is surprisingly poor, so I don't know what kind of hope Hammer fans can hold onto. Same applies to Brides of Dracula and Evil of Frankenstein, and any of the lesser-known Hammers they have. |
 The Bad Seed! With a Patty McCormack commentary! Sweeeeet!
|
Freaks and the Damned films are going to be real treats for August. I have a feeling it will be an expensive month.

Sweeeeet! All you Patty McCormack fans - are you familiar with the movie MOMMY? http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=AED002013 This is, in everything but name, a "sequel" to Bad Seed with Patty playing a grown-up version of Rhoda Penmark - names changed, of course, since the rights to a sequel were never acquired. The first clue is the opening shot, which picks up, in terms of camera movement, exactly where the original leaves off. And yes - it has a commentary track and yes, there was even a sequel to this. Rhoda lives! |

I maintain that most of the humor was no intentional. |
I'll be buying "The Bad Seed" & "Freaks" at a minimum.
I'm wondering how much of the "missing" footage cut from the 90-minute version has survived? M-G-M's Mayer, who apparently thought that "Freaks" was an embarrassment, leased the film to exploitation producer Dwain Esper. The film materials that Mayer gave to Mr Esper apparently included the official release, Browning's original cut and the revision shots. Several shots said to be cut from the eventual release include: 1. A scene of the barker's prologue speech 2. A scene of a tree that falls on Cleopatra's legs in the forest 3. A scene of Hercules singing soprano after supposedly being castrated by the freaks I hope this situation involving the 90 minute version will be addressed by the commentary &/or documentary. |

FREAKS. (Hopefully it won't be cancelled this time.)
|
Freaks finally!
And with alternate endings and the prologue that I've always heard about! The Skal commentary should be good too. I hope that they were able to improve the rather muffled soundtrack. I heard that they were going to work on that. |
