Your biggest DVD Pet Peeves
There was a previous thread about this and decided to take a poll to see what is the top pet peeves when it comes to DVD's.
I took the top ten pet peeves in that thread and chose them to see what is the top one. 1. Snapper Cases (Warner Brothers infamous case design) 2. Forced Trailers or Previews (Trailers or other commercials that begin automatically when you start the DVD.) 3. Long Menus (Menus that take too much time to play) 4. Full Frame or Pan and Scan Only Releases. (Of Widescreen Films) 5. Double Dipping (Re-Releases) 6. Bad Case/ Hub Designs (Designs that either ruin the DVD/ Case or takes up too much space or won't hold up over a long time.) 7. Confusing Menus (Menus that are confusing in design, or difficult to follow instructions, etc.) 8. FBI Warning 9. Security Devices or Stickers (That ruin the package when removed) 10. Incorrect Aspect Ratio (Wrong Aspect Ratio on the DVD, instead of 2.35 it is released as a 1.85, or another example a Full Screen ratio is released in Widescreen as in the recent Kung Fu TV Series) |
I would say damaged cases and loose disc. I don't really mind about incorrect aspect ratio because when they're not in OAR, I can opt not to buy the DVD. Forced trailer is quite a PITA too.
Forced Trailers, with annoying long menus a distant second.
How about other? Layer changes in awkward spots. The one that comes to mind is the one on Pulp Fiction, right in the middle of Christopher Walken's speech.
not having the film available in its OAR is the biggie.
that will completely void the purchase. after i have purchased though, a loose disc would be up there, and after that magled inserts or otherwised damaged casing material (my Escape From NY digipak was ripped to $hit, but there was no way to tell because the outside slipcase looked perfect). this is a big problem for me because i turn around and sell off a lot of my disc periodically, and if its not mint 9whic they otherwise would be) then i get screwed out of the resale value. after that my biggest nit is with not being able to switch audio channels on the fly. sometimes, when there is a commentary track, i wan't to engage it just for a certain scene to see what if anything is being said about it. its lame not to be able to just switch over, but instead have to stop the disc and go back into the menu , etc.. |
I cant stand the snap cases and they way they stick out when I have my movies orginized.
The other thing I dont like is the bad looking covers and spines..this might sound a little to picky but that and the snap cases are the only thing I dont like. |
How about other? Layer changes in awkward spots. The one that comes to mind is the one on Pulp Fiction, right in the middle of Christopher Walken's speech. I went through that post and found only 2 references to Layer Changes. Can't list everything. I went through that post and found the top ten (Counted) peeves responders had in regards to DVD and listed them here. Some others that I couldn't include in the poll are. 1. No Inserts 2. No Scene Selection 3. Commentary Responsibility Message from FOX video. 4. Expensive TV Box Sets. 5. Games on Animated DVD's 6. Audio Track Selection (Or other optoins) disabled. 7. "Floating Head" Cover Art 8. Flippers (Widescreen on one side/ Pan and Scan on the other) 9. Layer Changes 10. Easter Eggs 11. Non Anamorphic Widescreen Releases. Probably countless other or variations of the poll selections and those above. |
forced trailers
This poll should probably allow multiple choices...as much as i despise snappers, it's still my biggest gripe that some movies are released Full Frame only.
all of the above
Every single one of them. But I guess, since it's been around since the advent of DVDs, I hate the snapper cases most.
loose disc! i recently bought a toy story copy and relized when it was shipped that the dvd was loose! i'm still deciding if i should leave it "as is" (i dont plan on opening it) or just suck it up & open it, putting it back into it's spot..
I dont think I have just one. I hate all of these in no particular order.
No Inserts Snapper Cases No Disc art Flippers Forced Trailers Long Menus (they are neat the first time but after that.......) Incorrect Aspect Ratio Im sure there are others out there, just cant remember them |
security strips - top,side, bottom ... ugh!
Sorry to say but Snappers drive me crazy. I know it's superficial but isn't that always the case. I should say poor transfers of great (any) movies or worst, no transfer at all.
Forced Trailers, with annoying long menus a close second.
I voted for double-dipping, and would vote for forced trailers as a very close 2nd
I get real annoyed at the multiple releases for DVDS. Master and Commander is just the latest annoying DVD. The pricing structure of the 2-disc was just crazy. 25+ bucks for the 2 disc, when the 4 disc LOTR versions have been 25 bucks. A 2 disc version should be no more than 19.99. And you know at some point down the road they will do something else with Master and Commander. I don't mind if they want to have a 1 disc or 2 disc version. Just price them appropriately for what you get. I bought the original Black Hawk Down. Then they did the three disc, and now a superbit. Give me a break. The original Black Hawk Down should have had the DTS soundtrack. Same goes for Spiderman. Isn't that getting a new release soon for the sequal? The double dipping is getting worse and worse as studios realize that people will buy multiple versions of the same movie. |
Forced trailer where you can't fast forward or press button to go to main menu immediately and have to watch through the whole thing.
well techincally, on universal discs, you can fast forward. and on buena vista's dvd's you can hit the menu button
If it were a larger problem, I'd have to go for "Full Frame or Pan and Scan Only Releases". But I can only think of a VERY small handful of films that fall into this category (films I'm interested in, anyway...)
I'd go for the dreaded snapper case. The fact that Warner is still cranking these puppies out 6 years later, and after EVERY other studio abandoned them, is nuts. |
All of the above, but the worst for me is double dipping.

Cracked and scratched dicks.

what about INSERTS!?!?!??!
I hate no inserts.
Cheap bastards, give us a damn insert. And not one of these one page double sided pieces of garbage with only a chaper list and a boring picture. An original Scarface-style pullout with lots of pics and information is what I want. For ALL movies I buy. |
