Poll: Do you buy Special Edition re-releases?
With the ever increasing number of films being re-released in new Special Editions, do you re-buy them and if so, what determines your decision to do so?

I selected "Yes, but depends on new Special Features", which isn't entirely true. I don't care much about special features anymore, because many of them are just fluff/filler that I never watch. Upgrades in A/V (particularly non-anamorphic to anamorphic), on the other hand, will definitely get me interested.
So, I have no interest in the Pitch Black re-release, even though I really like the movie, but I'm very interested in re-releases of Top Gun, Crimson Tide, and Enemy of the State.

Only if the film has been cleaned up and is unrated. I don't care about most extra features I have seen. I do watch trailers to other movies that are of the same genre.
Oh yes, if it was previously a snapper and is now in a keep case. I'm waiting for Blade to be redone so it can sit next to Blade 2.

Depends... Agree 100% with the anamorphic comments... A new anamorphic transfer is an automatic buy for me. And I might "upgrade" for a DTS track... But special features are the last thing I consider when choosing to buy a double or triple dip. Extras are just that... Extras.

I don't see much difference between the 2nd and 3rd choices. They're both based on what special features are included (glass half full or half empty).
My SE upgrades are pretty much limited to the image transfer. If I really like a movie, there's little doubt I'll upgrade to an SE for it, especially if it's going from letterboxed to anamorphic.

I am willing to re-buy movies that I really like, as long as a few of my demands are met:
1) new & improved transfer
2) better packaging
3) reasonable price
4) more extras
5) bonus goodies or collectibles
6) free movie ticket

Yes for better transfer, more complete version, substantive extras (not just puff pieces culled from Entertainment Tonight), commentary track.
No for collectible dust gatherers, different packaging or cover art.

Films I've upgraded:
Almost Famous - from one-disc bare bones to 3-disc mega-set
Boogie Nights - one-disc Platinum to two-disc Platinum
Monty Python'sThe Meaning of Life - one-disc bare bones to two-disc set
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory - decent one-disc to special edition one-disc
I've been pretty good about keeping my ears open to avoid being burned on douple-dips (like Dogma, Panic Room and such)
Movies I'm looking forward to upgrading:
Blazing Saddles
Donnie Darko
The Game
Iron Giant

I would for the extras (if they are good ones).
A good example would be Panic Room. That is one that the extras sealed the deal for my purchase.
Casino is another one. I have had this bare-bones edition for years, and will gladly upgrade when the SE gets released.

Well, pretty much the same for me here. If it's a new anamorphic transfer, upgraded sound from 2.0 to 5.1 or better.
However because I got into DVD fairly late (2001), once I learned the difference between anamorphic and non-anamorphic (which didn't take long), I just never bought non-anamorphic titles. There's many titles out there that I want, but just held off buying them because of it.

It depends. If the transfer is better, as well as the sound and extras, I will probably buy again. However, if I REALLY like the film it's almost a definite.

I upgrade alot, but usually only if audio/video quality have been improved...if i really liked the movie, than i would upgrade if it has some cool extras, but most of the time i dont pay much attention to the extra features anyway.

yep, I'll pick them up only if I feel that the special features a really worth it. (in the case of Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor: Director's Cut) I am really tempted to pick up Saving Private Ryan, but at this point, I still don't know.

The extras would have to be really good (and dust gathering collectibles apply ), but mainly for 16x9. I upgraded Princess Bride and I'm waiting to upgrade Spaceballs. The Trek movies definitely since they're a mix of 16x9 upgrades and extras, plus finally having the proper cut of Wrath of Kahn on DVD.

Mainly yes if its a movie that I really enjoyed. Usually its more of the older movies that I rebuy (since a lot of them weren't in widescreen).
Although with DVD being big as it is, I wish they'd get it right the first time instead of the studio's being greedy.

Like most have said, I'll upgrade if the film's presentation has been improved, but not for the special features...and usually, I'll wait on "double dipping" until it is available through Columbia House as an enrollment title.

I can almost say I have never Double Dipped, the only ones I have ever done this to is LOTR.
The LOTR: FOTR was given to me for free, so I bought the EE version when it can out. Both version are very different, having both is awesome.
The LOTR: TTT I bought both versions and have been very happy with the purchase. I watched theater version many times, so once the EE version came out, I was able to enjoy it all over again. The extras in the EE helped the movie make a little more since.
I already have LOTR: ROTK theater version and I am looking forward to getting the EE version. The EE version will be like a new movie, it has about 40 extra minutes added.
And, they all look beautiful sitting next to each other in my entertainment center.
Other than that, I have never spent the time or money to upgrade any DVD I own.
Even when HDDVD comes out, I won't double dip. Most of my new DVD will be bought in HD, and I will be happy with that.
