KILL BILL picture quality

Does the last fight scene look dark to you? (Picture quality/Brightness wise)

matome 04-13-04 01:00 PM

Looked fine to me.

Groucho 04-13-04 01:01 PM

I think my DVD is defective. It keeps switching to black and white?

Thankfully that won't be an issue for me. :)

wordtoyamotha 04-13-04 01:05 PM

I would like to piggyback this thread if I could and ask for comments on overall picture quality if possible?

DonnachaOne 04-13-04 01:08 PM

Well, I checked several reviews - no-one makes an issue of it being too dark, but everyone says it's a bit soft on details.

asianxcore 04-13-04 01:15 PM

yea I agree, the picture quality is solid. But I think its a tad soft at times.

sorry to go off topic, but did anyone also think the subtitles were too small?

QuiGonJosh 04-13-04 01:30 PM

The picture looks exactly has it should...sharp...defined...vibrant colors...and a bit grainy and soft to reflect the type of film...a throwback to 70's Revenge/Kung-Fu films...

REL77 04-13-04 01:42 PM

i thought it was a very good solid transfer, hopefully the SE will be top notch

Note for asianxcore:

You need a bigger TV :)

nightmaster 04-13-04 06:21 PM

Looks great to me. I'd forgotten how PRETTY this movie is to watch till today.

Seantn 04-13-04 06:43 PM

Do I have a defective disc? At the beginning of the movie when the logo comes on the screen it was really grainy, kinda like a really old type projector movie. And yeah, groucho's right, it keeps switching to black and white. Hopefully they will recall these defective discs.

Halp plz!!1

reubs82 04-13-04 09:11 PM

I gave this a rent, and then I went and bought it from FYE. I heard mixed stuff going in, but afterwards I realized what a really enjoyable film it was. The PQ looked fine to me, BTW, but it did seem a little soft. I figured that was the intention.

Off topic, slightly, though: has anyone watched the trailers yet, mainly the one for Pulp Fiction. Does anyone else wish that the Pulp Fiction DVD PQ looked more like that? I for one do b/c it's just a look that goes so well for that movie.

Hubcap 04-13-04 10:13 PM

i thought the picture was great...But what is up with when uma says here name? Its like bleeped out. Is there some inside story to that or what. loved the audio track for the entire movie as well. Defently a good blind but.

On a serious note..... I can't wait to pick this DVD up. I love this movie so much. I don't mind double dipping for the SE later on.

I'm pretty sure it's intentional. It happens when Oren and Vernita say it too. Hopefully we'll find out when Vol. 2 comes out Friday

neocheddar02 04-14-04 12:22 AM

It's a throwback to oldschool movies that have heros with no names. "The bride" is the only name she goes by, bleeping out the name is QT's homage to these films.

I'm pretty sure her name is

No, no. It's
Spoiler:
BEATRIX.

On a related note, I really hope I spoiled that for someone.

Tags added. Why did you hope you spoiled it for someone? - Static

cultshock 04-14-04 02:22 AM

Yeah, her full name is
Spoiler:
Beatrix Kiddo
and the bleeping is just a homage. Didn't we cover all this months ago? :p

You must be getting a version without the wedding flashbacks then.

Rypro 525 04-14-04 11:02 AM

hold up, so the wedding flashbacks are not in the region 2 dvd?

cultshock 04-14-04 03:51 PM

Nah, he just meant that there are still other B&W scenes in the Japanese cut.

Shroud 04-17-04 12:24 AM

Think I will wait for the Ted Turner Colorized Edition to come out.

CrashNBurn69 04-17-04 01:22 AM

so was the black and white fight not meant to be black and white? was it done for too much blood or what?

hoyalawya 04-17-04 01:32 AM

I think that PQ is a disappointment especially for a such a recent movie. Although colors are very good and accurate, I feel that this transfer lacks details. Larger objects are fine but smaller ones are certainly not. For example, in the first fight scene, I could hardly make out any details on Uma's face when she is a bit further away (e.g., a shot that displays her from head-to-toe). Revolution and 21 Grams are much better.

P.S., My viewing equipments comprise of a 50" LCD RPTV and the Bravo D1 DVD player connected through DVI and upscaled to 720p.

i'd agree.
i'd rate the PQ on this disc as only a B- parts of the film looked quite striking- but that was more because of the way it was shot and not the quality of the disc.

check out the begining of chapter 4 (the overhead shot in the kitchen)
ringing around many of the edges and just a generally harsh, electronic look to the image.
lots of filtering apparently too as fine details seem to come and go within the same shot at times.

i was using a Toshiba 5960 and Panasonic RP56 fed via a component/rgb cable into a NEC HT1000 projecting about 70" wide

DavidH 04-17-04 09:52 AM

I just watched it last night (ISF'd 61" Sony, Panasonic RV80 DVD player) and thought the colors were very strong (probably because of the way it was shot as the last poster just said), however the picture looked a bit too filtered and definitely too grainy. It didn't look like film grain either --- more like compression artifacts.
However, as far as I am concerned, most Disney DVDs --- Mirimax, Vista, etc. look like sh*t....usually edge enhancement, artifacts, etc.

It was changed from color to B&W to appease the MPAA who were going to give it an NC-17 rating but QT later said that he prefers the scene in black and white.

That's not true.

It was always planned to be in B&W - it's written that way in the screenplay (the one that was circulating around the 'net about a year before Volume 1 was released).

This has been discussed many times in various threads here.

Yocke 04-18-04 08:16 AM

Yes he wrote that in the screenplay because he knew the MPAA would never let that pass. Why would he otherwise have used the kind of blood that looks almost transparant in black and white, and why else is he right now planning a director's cut of both films with the house of blue leaves scene in color?

mzupeman2 04-18-04 08:36 AM

This is all being discussed in another kill bill thread right now, not sure why this thread hasn't merged with that one just yet.

But yeah, the picture quality on the R1 release is absolutely fine. Any kind of grain or any kind of 'soft' picture qualities you may notice... that's the way it's supposed to be. It's too bad that not everybody can appreciate what QT was trying to achieve with this film, and instead go into a confused frenzy complaining about the black and white scenes and the soft picture at times and the bleeping out of 'The Bride's name.
