Whats the best way to repair a cracked DVD?
One of my DVDs is slightly cracked in the inner circle. It still plays fine, but I'm worried that it might get worse, rendering the disk unplayable. Any good tips out there on how to fix it? (apart from buying a new copy).
For those interested, it’s the T2 Ultimate Edition DVD, I think the packaging caused the crack.

Here's my solution.
1. Hold the DVD firmly in your hand.
2. Hold DVD over garbage recepticle
3. Drop DVD into said recepticle
4. Go to ebay and buy one of the T2 Ultimate Edition DVDs that sells for $5.99 or so.
DVDs are cheap enough that if it's a common title damaged, you're just better off getting it replaced. I doubt there's a praticle way to repair your disc.

Unfortunately, the only option is to buy a new disc.
Even if you could fix the disc, the odds are high that the fix would throw the repaired disc out of balance and cause damage to your DVD player.

Well, i was thinking of some thing.. how about those little stickers that you could place over the crack. ALA the SALO white inside. Since i dont own the dvd , i do not know if it is a sticker at all and even if there is even a product out there like it.
Or ... just get another copy on Ebay....

As for fixing, glue might work but make sure it says it can be used on plastic.
I wouldn't try tape, but a cd label might work. There are labels that just cover the center ring, some cover the main disc, some cover the entire thing. Every office and electronics store sell them. In this case it would be more expensive than just buying a new T2 disc though.

The only problem with that is if you have a set. One disc craked and the others are fine. That is not cheap to replace.
I know it's cheaper because I had to replace my copy, and I wound up getting the two disc, which I was okay with, but it had the cardboard sleeve instead of the cool metal one, which I was upset about.
To answer the question, wouldn't some sort of sticker work? What I'm thinking is something similar to what Blockbuster sticks on discs, something which can still be read through (this would only work on a one-sided disc, I believe), but would hold the damage together.
Then again, if it plays fine, you don't have much to worry about, IMO.

If the crack is just on the inner ring and not at the data point, I would try superglue. Very little, spread on w/ a toothpick or something similar, on both sides of the crack. Just enough to seal the crack and no more.

And if that doesn't work -- duct tape.

If the disc plays fine, then I would check the "snuggness" of the hub. If it seems a tad tight, find another storage medium. This way, there's no more undue pressure put on the crack that could possibly make it worse.
or just use duct tape

I'd never put such DVD into my player. Once it is shattered inside (which does sometimes happen), you will have to throw away your player.

Like the advices above, just replace the cracked disc.
If it's a Criterion disc, you can probably get Jon to replace it free of charge.
If it's a Disney/Buena Vista disc, you can get it replaced for $10. I think.

I had the very same thing happen to me recently with my Doctor Who: Dalek Invasion of Earth DVD (Disc 1). The crack was at the mid-point between the center and the actual DVD. I e-mailed BBCAmerica and they shipped out a replacement DVD free of charge.
However if the DVD is out of print, that might cause a problem. A year ago, my Criterion Robocop had a tiny crack developing from the center. I begged Criterion for a replacement but they said they couldn't because it was OOP.
It depends on which company supplies the DVD and if it's in print. It's worth a shot e-mailing Artisan to see if they have any left. Other than that - EBAY!

I have had this happen before with a disc and used a little bit of Superglue pushed into the crack and spread evenly over both sides of the crack and it worked fine.
I did, however, replace the case (which was one of those old Universal "claw-center" cases. Ugh).
