What are some good creepy DVD's released in the last year?

I love a good creepy/scary/suspenseful DVD. Along the lines of Below or What Lies Beneath. I even like a few corny ones like Darkness Falls (but couldn't get into Jeepers Creepers). Just rented the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and enjoyed it. Although, Jessica Biel probably had a LOT to do with said enjoyment. More movies with Jessica Biel please!

I haven't been able to pay close enough attention to releases (both theatrical and DVD) over the past year... hell maybe even two years, so there's a good chance I've missed some (damn real life distracting me from my hobbies).

Anyone have some recommendations for me to check out?

Onibaba: CC, but it is a completely different class than TCM (2003)...

Cheers

I typically don't like slasher movies. Like I said, Jessica Biel probably had a lot to do with my enjoying that movie. My god that woman is fine.

Not a huge fan of non-english movies either but I check one out through netflix on occasion. I'll give your suggestion a shot.

Although the review in DVDT is less then steller, Suicide Club, a Japanese semi-horror flick about teenagers (mainly girls) kiling themselves in droves is definately creepy, and most (if not all violence) is off screen.

Although a foreign film, still worth renting (not buying).

The Eye got good reviews for a foreign horror film. http://imdb.com/title/tt0325655/
trailer- http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/the_eye.html

Since you aren't a huge fan of foreign have you tried:

Gothika
Identity
Wrong Turn - slasher i believe though

Seen wrong turn. Didn't do much for me. Gothika has been at the top of my rental queue since it was released but it's still on "long wait" (they're punishing me for renting too many movies per month I think). That's made by the same people that made Ghost Ship, House on Haunted Hill and Thirteen Ghosts isn't it? I liked the trailers that I've seen of it.

Just added Identity and the foreign films as per your suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

This is getting great reviews from netflix users by the way. It's currently at just a hair under 4 stars overall and a lot of the text reviews are very positive.

Not last year, but from 2001 or 2002, I think: Session 9. A creepy, abandoned, psychiatric hospital..... need I say more?

I'll second Session 9 as a great recommendation.

Woman in Black was very creepy, one of the best British horror films I've seen in a very long time. Onibaba was brilliant, but like Smurf said, in a different class than TCM.... If you can bring yourself to watching a subtitled film, The Eye and Ju-On are must see horror movies.

Also subtitled, the Japanese film Audition is very creepy (especially if you don't know anything about it; Totally freaked out some of my frineds who are hooro-hounds).
If you have multi-region capability, A Tale Of Two Sisters from South Korea is the creepiest film I've seen in a while.

Also, going back a few years I'd recommend Frailty (2001).

I am not sure if "Abandon" was last year, with Katie Holmes, but that one actually surprised me.

I got Session 9 and Frailty on recommendations from the last time I made a thread like this a couple years ago. Good stuff.

Seems like every time this subject is brought up, most of the suggestions are Japanese movies. I'm going to rent what's been suggested. The only one I've ever watced was Ringu but I watched that after I saw the american version which probably biased me toward the american version as I liked that one better.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

Are there any good, scary movies with aliens in them out there besides Signs and Communion (good being a relative term for both of those)?

You ever see Event Horizon? It doesn't contain aliens like Signs, but it does have an alien/foreign/demonic presence in the film. It has been a while since I have seen it and can't really recall what was at the root of all the chaos. I remember it being a decent film though.

Plot Outline: A rescue crew investigates a spaceship that disappeared into a black hole and has now returned...with someone or something new on-board.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0119081/

I should add that the R1 DVD leaves much to be desired. Non-anamorphic with a trailer as the only extra.

I'd just like to say that The Eye is a great film, you really should check it out. Inner Senses is also great if you ask me.

Also mentioned before, May is very weird and very solid. Check out Ginger Snaps (the first and second one), Dog Soldiers, and Haute Tension if you can find it on DVD where you are. That one isn't in the US yet on DVD though.

Just...trust me on these, you will not be disappointed.

I was in the DVDTALK chat sometime ago and someone in there raved about Dog Soldiers. I still need to check that one out as well.

Just FYI, Netflix tends to have all of these. No luck with Haute Tension though.

Event Horizon was among the first DVD's I ever bought. They need to re-release it with a new anamorphic transfer though. It's on my list of titles to upgrade to HD-DVD/Blu-ray/whatever though so I guess it doesn't matter.

I second, THE EYE, even though the movie is good at best, it's still one of the creepiest movies I've seen in the past year. It definately has some scares you'll remember for a while.

Gee, nobody's recommended RINGU or the remake yet. Or has it been over a year since the DVD release?

Just about nothing from Hollywood - so sorry, although suitable for your tastes, these will all probably have to be netflix queues due their foreign nature. All are thoughtful, creepy and suspenseful in the truest sense ....

As others have mentioned, check out Onibaba.

Another to consider is Cure by Kiyoshi Kurosawa

An oldie, but always a goodie .... Audition by Miike Takashi

And I hear Swimming Pool is pretty good, however I have not seen this one ....

Not yet! Consider yourself the first.
