What was the last AMERICAN Criterion and what would you like next?

Could fit the whole question in the title:

What was the most recent Criterion release that was an american film, and what would you like to see next (American films)?

I'd love to see the long rumored The Game

The upcoming 3 WOMEN is an American film, and PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET in Feb was the last US film they released.

I'd like to see LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN.

21 Grams
King of the Hill
Short Cuts
East of Eden

I'd still love to see a Coen Bros. movie get the Criterion treatment. My first choices would be either The Big Lebowski, Miller's Crossing, or maybe Raising Arizona. I'd like to see a super-definitive Fargo release, but the MGM Special Edition is pretty good.

I completely forgot about The Delicate Art of the Rifle. I'd love that one as well.

Criterion's releases of U.S. films seem to fall into a few categories--

Films from:

--The public domain (Charade, My Man Godfrey, the W.C. Fields shorts) [I could be wrong about all of these but I think they're PD]

--Criterion-friendly studios (Universal, Fox)

--Directors with enough clout and interest to release Criterion versions of their films (Anderson, Bay, Lee)

--Independent producers, or those not owned by the major studios for whatever reason (Monterrey Pop, The Devil and Daniel Webster [an RKO release but not owned by WB])

Of course there might be a few exceptions that I haven't listed ... but given these, ah, criteria, does this limit the possibilities of what might be reasonable to expect?

A couple of PD titles that would be great to see would be the early Technicolor Becky Sharp and Nothing Sacred. I believe the UCLA film archive has restored Becky Sharp. I have seen some pretty rough looking TV prints of Nothing Sacred but once in a documentary I saw about 30 seconds of a beautiful, clear, great condition print. If these exist in good condition prints then I say they would be great (albeit older) candidates.

I'd like to see She's Gotta Have It, since they did the laserdisc. That's the only early Spike Lee movie I don't have on DVD.

Dare I say it? How about Good Burger as a CC release?

I would love to see Criterion do a treatment on Cagney. Doesn't matter which film per se but White Heat would be my preference.

with the rumoured John Ford Release, i'm really really really hoping for Drums Along the Mohawk...failing that: Young Mr. Lincoln.

Wouldn't the upcoming Cassevetes release(s) be considered "American?" **Crosses fingers for Chinese Bookie**

I'm sure if I gave this more thought I could come up with more, but...

Realistic choice:

* A set of Chaplin's Keystone output

Unrealistic choices:

* Lynch's Dune
* Magnificent Ambersons

214 The Devil and Daniel Webster
220 Naked Lunch
224 Pickup on South Street
230 3 Women

I sense a pattern...

It looks like one of every five Criterions are American films. I would love to see a Criterion of Chimes at Midnight. Other than that, I can't think of anything that's even remotely possible (I doubt they could get their hands on anything by Ford or Hawks, for example)

Of the US films that Criterion actually has a chance at releasing, I would love to see films by the following directors:

Harold Lloyd: The Freshman, The Kid Brother, Safety Last (Harold Lloyd Trust)
John Cassavetes: Faces, Opening Night, A Woman Under the Influence (?)
Wes Anderson: the upcoming The Life Aquatic--which appears to be a done deal (Buena Vista)
Frank Borzage: 7th Heaven, Street Angel (Fox)
F.W. Murnau: City Girl/Our Daily Bread (Fox)
Alan Arkin: Little Murders (Fox)
Max Ophüls: Letter from an Unknown Woman (?)
Jean Renoir: The River, The Southerner (?)
Leo McCarey: Make Way for Tomorrow, Ruggles of Red Gap (Universal)
Mitchell Leisen: Easy Living, Midnight (Universal)
Preston Sturges: The Palm Beach Story (Universal)
Billy Wilder: Double Indemnity (Universal)

While I would be happy to see all four (counting the upcoming The Life Aquatic) of Wes Anderson's films in the CC, the rights to Bottle Rocket are held by Columbia TriStar, which does not have a working relationship with Criterion. AFAIK, they haven't licensed any of their films to other companies for DVD release.

Scratch Little Murders from my list: Fox has just announced they'll be releasing it in June.
