What is the best version of each of the Halloween movies?

I guess the latest Halloween movies are obvious, but what about most of the earlier ones? So far I've concluded that the 2-disc Limited Edition is the best for the first one, but what about the rest?

Thanks!

Is the 2-disc limited edition the one with both the theatrical version and the one with extra scenes filmed later by Carpenter for the TV version? I don't believe that one is available anymore, but both of these DVDs can still be purchased separately. That's what I did, so I could own both versions. It didn't cost anymore than the original retail price of the limited edition.

My favorite version is the Divimax 2 disc version...havent really watch the extras yet, but as far as audio/video quality is concerned, that version really impressed me the most.

As far as the sequels go, i had the Goodtimes release of the second one, then bought the Universal version, and i thought the Universal version was better.....unfortunately no extras though.

Currently, these are the best available versions for each of the Halloween films on region 1 DVD:

Halloween - 2003 Anchor Bay DiviMax 25th Anniversary Edition (+ 2001 Extended Edition for "TV" cut)

Halloween II - 2001 Universal version

Halloween III - 2003 Universal version

Halloween 4 - 2001 Anchor Bay version (Limited Edition tin is the same DVD)

Halloween 5 - 2000 Anchor Bay version (Limited Edition tin is the same DVD)

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers - 2000 Dimension version (unfortunately non-anamorphic, and non-Producer's cut)

Halloween: H20 - 1999 Dimension version (unfortunately non-anamorphic)

Halloween: Resurrection - 2002 Buena Vista version

Keep in mind the color timing is NOT approved on the Divimax release.

even though the H25 Divimax disc has a shitload of extras, I still prefer the 99' THX release of Halloween.

also I wish universal didn't put such a shit DVD together for Halloween 2. 22 bucks for a barebones DVD is dumb.

I have both the '99 version and the Divimax. I'm a sucker for the features.

That's not true anymore; at least the theatrical version is out-of-print (and has been replaced by a new two-disc Divimax version with a debatably inferior transfer), and I believe the TV cut is OOP as well (not totally sure on that).

However, I agree with you that they're the ones to get (although the extras make the Divimax version worth buying, the color's way off).

Agree with chanster I do, yes, hmm! They totally destroyed the mood on the Divimax release. Cundey personally approved the color on '99 THX release!

FYI. Rumor has it Anchor Bay is currently working on Special Divimax Editions of H4 and H5. Some materials for each film have been recently obtained by them for use.

I can say no more.

on topic,

Halloween THX + Extended = Halloween 2 disc L.E.

Halloween 2 Universal

Halloween III Universal

I would LOVE to get a SE of H4 (and even H5). Kudos to Anchor Bay if they are actually doing this.

If only they could get the rights to the other films, especially H2 and H6. Both of those are screaming for SEs and alternate cuts.

Thanks for the feedback.

I recently won the LE of the first film on eBay for $18, so I think that's a great buy.

I was going to wait and hold out for a possible box set one day, but I doubt we'll see that anytime soon, if ever. So I'm just going to create my own collection of the series now.

Brent, that is a good buy! The LE of Halloween has the same transfer for the theatrical cut that the '99 THX release of Halloween does. They both look fantastic and have the right color.

i just bought Halloween 6 from KoreanDVDs.com.

http://www.koreandvds.com/dvddetail.html?id=7342

This is the only one I know thats anamorphic, and region free to boot. The transfer is out of date, I guess similar to AB 4 & 5.

There is Halloween H20 from Japan, about $30, thats anamorphic, 5.1 and NTSC. Unfortunatly its region code 2, so you just need a hacked player. No PAL to NTSC conversions.

I only stick wish Asian imports that are NTSC. Its easy to get around the region coding, without the confusion of video conversion. You can go mad trying to figure out how to convert PAL and make it look good. Im trying not to put down PAL though. I plan to buy a projector next year with PAL in mind. Its cheaper to shop anywhere than Japan for DVD's, so Korea is a good place for your money.

Speaking of Korea, they are going to get ID4 in DTS.

Hmmm...I may have to search out this R2 H20. Except for extremely rare occasions I only stick with NTSC non R1 discs (hate PAL speedup) as well.

Here it is:

The TV version sucks...dont waste your time...

Simply get the 1999 Halloween DVD and the 25th Anniversary Divimax...the 99 DVD has the better transfer and approved colors and the Divimax has the excellent extras...
