Details: Mystic River
Here's one I know a lot of people have been looking forward to. Warner have announced Mystic River for the 8th June. It will be available in both a 3 disc special edition and a single disc movie only release. Each of these will carry a 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation and both English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. As well as disc three containing the films soundtrack, extras on the special edition will include an audio commentary by Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon, two documentaries as well as three interviews with Clint Eastwood, Tim Robins and Kevin Bacon. Retail will be around $39.98. The movie only release on the other hand will set you back around $27.95 in total. Artwork for the special edition is below, and the single disc artwork is over on our site:

I love this trend of studios jacking up the price for extras that should be there anyway and throwing in something like a soundtrack, or in the case of Master & Commander and Texas Chainsaw Massacre, nothing. I love going to a store and paying over 30 dollars for a single movie. Thank you Warners, Fox and every other grateful company that practices this. Hopefully one day all 2-disc sets will have a SRP of $39.98 if we keep purchasing them. Whee!

Thanks for the info.
I would rather have a 2-disc set (sans soundtrack) for a cheaper price. Although it seems like they aren't charging a tremendous premium vs. the single disc... $40 retail is a bit much.
I think I'll pass on this until I find an amazing deal. Or just skip it entirely.

I hope they only put out a fullscreen version of the deluxe edition so I can justify buying the single disc version too. I want to spend as much money as possible.

But how is my claim of 30 dollars per movie (with the new trend of 2-discs being 39.98 SRP) wrong? Even if it is sold at 24.99 like Texas Chainsaw Massacre is at Circuit City there is still tax.
Ok, so that's a few bucks under 30 dollars but then again usually the $39.98 retailers aren't $24.99. TCM 2-Disc at Best Buy is $29.99. Yes, granted it does come with an optional free TCM 1974 DVD, but gee, what if we don't want an extra DVD? Do we get the price knocked down?. Just like we don't want a soundtrack...? What if we have the soundtrack? What if we have the extra DVD?

If i wanted the CD soundtrack I would have bought it seperatly...
They should offer a 2 disk edition.. its just stupid to put prices up because of "useless" extras...

At least we're not being forced to double dip with a movie-only snapper and then a better version down the road. It looks like the 3-disc set is similar in packaging to the Warner Special editions of late, so it should be a good set. But I found the soundtrack to be very minimal during the film, and certainly not a film soundtrack that I have to have or will probably even listen to. I'm guessing they're adding it in there since Eastwood composed it (and so they can jack the price).

Hmm, I'm not sure if the SE/movie-only pricing strategy will work with a film like Mystic River. It's not like the movie was an impressive technical marvel (this is not a knock on the film).

the soundtrack looks pretty bad, i just checked it out at amazon...What do you guys think the price will be for this 3 disc set. I dont think they will sell it at 40 some odd dollars. 25 to 30? I just dont know about that. I havnt seen the movie yet but heard it was pretty good. I just dont know if i can throw out that kind of money espically with a lot of good movies coming out on dvd the next few months.

Finally, the best movie of last year comes to DVD. I'll probably get the special edition. I love the music enough to own a separate CD, and I really want those commentaries. No price is too high for greatness.
