Do you think 9/11 is affecting certain movies being released?

I can think of two examples:

First, a better version of Armageddon. The first CC was obviously released pre-9/11. I'm wondering if they try to re-release it if they'll try to edit out the WTC destruction sequences.

Second, I'd like to see one of Tom Hanks' early movies, Mazes & Monsters, released on DVD, but the last part of the movie, and especially the climax, is set specifically around, in and on the towers.

Anyone have any opinions on this, and any other examples?

"...any other examples?"

...erm... the 1976 King Kong...?...

. . . :o . . .

VincentVega 03-27-04 01:08 PM

True Lies SE was rumored put on hold because of 9/11.

I doubt they'll start editing older movies to remove the towers. That's just stupid.

chesola 03-27-04 01:12 PM

The King Kong remake is pretty easily available. I kept waiting for it to pulled from the market, but it never was.

I think the studios were being cautious a few years ago when the attacks were fresh in everyone's minds. However that mindset has passed now and everything is once again fair game.

mrhan 03-27-04 01:16 PM

There was that release delay in the theaters of Arnold Schwarzenneger's movie after 9/11.

Rammsteinfan 03-27-04 01:23 PM

I bet they are keeping HOWARD THE DUCK from us because of it... damn them!!!!

Mike Lowrey 03-27-04 01:25 PM

Well, I'm as concerned about 9/11 as anyone should be, but I think at this time and date, any older movie with images of the towers should go ahead and be released.

Hopefully in about 10 years when the replacement buildings are built, we'll all look back at the towers and think, that it was just a point in history that needs remembering, but not dwelt upon as something that needs to be avoided (or censored).

dcprules 03-27-04 01:27 PM

Yeah, I think it is affecting releasing various movies. Definitely agree about True Lies. Also, I wonder if we would have gotten the Die Hard SE discs if they were scheduled for a release after 9/11.

asianxcore 03-27-04 03:10 PM

I'm kind of wondering now, what will happen to that episode of the Simpsons where Homer goes to New York when that season hits DVD. I remember for a while after 9-11 I didn't see that episode, and I honestly haven't seen it since.

KenobiKid22 03-27-04 03:34 PM

I was almost sure they would change the Little Nicky cover soon after the events off 9/11. For the life of me I can't remember what movie came out withing the 6 months following that they removed the towers from, anyone? Or maybe that was just talk, I can't remember now. But heres the LN cover

Wasn't there some crackpot fringe freaking out about LotR: The Two Towers title? I swear I read something about a group of people thinking the title was new and somehow a play for publicity after the WTC attack.

The Antipodean 03-27-04 04:14 PM

Does anyone think it's weird a guy named "The Infidel" is asking about 9/11 movies? :whofart: ;)

Yeah, I remember that too. I think they were threatening to sue them unless they changed the title.

Didnt they also change the cover of some chick flick becasue she was giving a peace sign, or was that do do about Iraq II (I cant remember but there was a thread on it ages ago)

The Infidel 03-27-04 04:17 PM

I asked about movies, not where the capitalist dogs have hidden their missiles. Ask about the name before hinting at something that couldn't be more offensive if you tried.

matome 03-27-04 04:22 PM

The peace sign thing was Amanda Bynes "What A Girl Wants".

As for as the Towers, I think there was also a trailer for American Pie 2 that edited out shots of the Towers as well (something to do with Nadia in the city). I heard the True Lies SE story as well and have since given up and bought the R3 disc so I could get anamorphic.

Robert 03-27-04 04:27 PM

True Lies 2 was all ready to go but 9/11 put the kaibosh on that.

mtucker 03-27-04 04:57 PM

The towers were removed from Zoolander, I think.

The Infidel 03-27-04 05:05 PM

I'm sure a lot of people know about this already, but I thought it was interesting that there was a brief shot of the towers that was left in Spider-Man. At the very end of chapter 14, they show an extreme close-up of Spidey's head, and right before they pan quickly out, you can see the towers reflected in his right eye.

Anyone or everyone else notice this?

ThatGuamGuy 03-27-04 05:40 PM

The 'Two Towers' title-change was a joke petition that a few idiots in the media believed as a true outrage, and then once one place told the story, everybody began running it with nobody bothering to check whether it was true or not.

I believe snopes has an entry about it, if you care to check, but the whole thing didn't actually happen, other than on the news.

False. As pointed out Spiderman contains images of the WTC. The Spiderman trailer (which contained a sequence created only for the trailer and was never intended to be in the film) was removed from theaters.

False. The New York scenes were not filmed in New York but on some anonimous busy street (probably in LA). In the finished film buildings (not the WTC) were added to the background to make the shot look like NY. The trailer contains an unfinished version of this shot that does not contain the special effects.

I'm sure nothing will happen to it. That episode has aired numerous times in syndication since 9/11.

PopcornTreeCt 03-27-04 06:49 PM

No. The Armageddon SE was released by Criterion. Criterion wouldn't give into something so childish.

namlook 03-27-04 07:00 PM

Removing the two towers from movies or DVD covers seems ridiculous. Why is it "sensitive" to act like something didn't exist? So people won't think about the tragedy? The towers are a part of our history and should not be erased from our minds.
