Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster
 

It looks like a company called CineVu is going to put out a Region 1 disc of what many (including myself) consider to be the best Godzilla movie of the Showa Era (CLICK HERE).

The Amazon listing says the release date was March 10 (a Wednesday), but John Matarazzo of CineVu recently told someone on the MZ board that it will be out in about three weeks. Matarazzo btw is erroneously credited as the director of GTTHM on the Amazon listing (no doubt causing Ishiro Honda to spin in his grave).

'Bout damn time...this is one of the best G-flix, and this will fill a gap in my collection as well (I will always rue the day I sold off the Scimitar release of this movie!).

Subbed? Dubbed? Lbx? Anamorphic?

Arrgh! I picked up the laser of this on fleabay a little while ago. Beautiful transfer. Been looking for a script to sub it myself, but hopefully I won't have to now.

CineVu's website doesn't exactly fill me with confidence.

And Zombiezilla, I think you're thinking of G. v. Monster Zero, the one with Nick Adams. AFAIK, no one has released Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster on DVD anywhere (even Japan).

Is this the same John Matarazzo of Beverly Wilshire Filmworks? That is, the 'company' that released all those "public domain" releases of Mexican horror films and was then later shut down after being threatened with a lawsuit for releasing their unauthorized DVD of the documentary "Manson".

If so, I think this new "Ghidrah" DVD will be full-frame and digitally mastered from VHS. "Extras" will consist of scene selection. The keepcase will have a synopsis written by a 5-year old and artwork drawn by the same kid.

How many John Matarazzoes can there be in the business? If this is the same person, what you're saying isn't too encouraging. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

My favorite G movie. A classic.

I'll pick it up no matter what kind of print it is.

Pass. I'm still holding on to the vain hope that someday we might get an R1 subbed release of the older G-films.

You're not alone. If it's ever going to happen, you'd think this would be the year.

Classic Media has said they would re-release their titles in widescreen (probably not Terror of Mechagodzilla), as well as put out Monster Zero (not to mention Frankenstein Conquers the World and War of the Gargantuas). No word about Japanese tracks on those discs.

ADV is putting out Destroy All Monsters in a 50th Anniversary Special Edition. Specs on that are unknown, except that it will include a soundtrack CD.

C'mon, Jeff. Obviously they're referring the the 50th anniversary of Godzilla. I'm cool with "50th Anniversary" getting plastered on any DVD cover if it means more films and/or better versions being available.

Maybe this one will have chapter stops. The current Destroy All Monsters is the barebones DVD that all barebones DVDs aspire to be.

An anamorphic transfer would be reason enough to upgrade for me. Any word on that?

It's even worse than you predicted. Totally pathetic. Here's a picture of the cover "art". And that's only the beginning. It clearly says widescreen on the cover but it is not. And the worst part... are you ready for this? It's a DVD-R! No sh**!

The "Ghidra" DVD is truly the worst I've ever seen.

As stated it isn't widescreen as the cover claims, and the picture quality is pathetic. The picture blurs anytime anything moves as well.

I've got the old LP speed Goodtimes VHS version, and it is far better than this DVD.

Avoid at all costs!

Nobody takes the release of these films types of films seriously, do they?

Do they even know how many GURANTEED sales they will have to please jus the geek crowd?

If when you say "these types" you mean the longest running franchise in filmdom, then yes, there are people who take their release on DVD seriously.

This is the 50th anniversary of Godzilla, and the industry is taking it seriously too. CineVu notwithstanding, there have been three excellent releases of Goji movies this year already, and there are more on the way.

DaiKaiju Eiga may not be your cup of tea, kind Dr., but there are a lot of others that enjoy it.

You definitely took my post the wrong way. I love these movies as well, and my comment was meant to be taken in more of a frustrated tone, not one of sarcasm as you might suspect. I am a geek who wishes for a decent treatment as much as you!
I was meant to convey that it seems as though nobody cares about the release of these movies, even though we very much do. It just seems to me that we are too small a base for them to take the time to devout to a decent release.
Speaking of a similar issue, I just picked up a collection of Westerns for $15 that were advertised as WS and they don't seem to be at all. :(

As far as nobody caring, Sony really seems to. They've acquired the rights to some classic Godzilla titles that they'll be releasing on dvd soon. You can read about it here: henshinonline.com. It's the April 2 article.
