How does that work, anyway? Do all studios get an equal cut? Does the studio which releases no name b-movies get the same royalties as Disney?

For shits sake I just bought the Sony DRU 530A!!! Crap! For only 30 bucks less too.

I back up all my DVDs to DVD-R, and I have Sony DVD jukeboxes that FLIP discs, so I record onto double-sided DVD-Rs. This way Instead of 300 titles, my jukeboxes can play 600 titles each. There's alot of compression software out there that allows you to strip all the extras, and extra dialog tracks off the original DVD so that even a DVD 9 can fit perfectly onto a DVD-R without loss of quality. Since I am very happy with this arrangement, unless they eventually release dual layered DVD+Rs that are dual sided, I don't think I'll be upgrading to a Dual layered DVD recorder.

I've been told by someone that depending on the current single layer DVD burner you buy today, you might be able to upgrade the firmware one day so that it can become a dual-layer burner. I'm not sure if this is true or not.

Hey, if you get duped on ebay or something, but it's the exact same DVD-9 disc, who cares? You're getting the same movie with perfect quality and all the extras.

I gotta agree with Josh on this one. Have you ever noticed the homemade DVD covers people make for bootlegs . . . ahem, excuse me, I mean "backups"? In many cases, not only are they indiscernable from studio produced inserts, most oftimes they are even BETTER.

I backup a lot of DVDs as well, but even if you strip every extra from your disc, which I prefer NOT to do if I don't have to, because I like extras, most movies themselves are still too large for a DVD-5, and some compression is going to have to take place anyway.

True, but since I'm more interested in TV shows, they don't have to be compressed, I just put 4 or 5 to a side instead of the 7 or 8 that come on the disc. Also, with the new compression software that's out there, like DVD Shrink, the movies I have compressed look so good you would be very hard pressed to tell it was compressed. Compression of up to 85% of original quality still looks pretty unnoticeable, even to my eyes.

Shhhh....people here don't like to hear that the truth is that movies can look perfect on a dvd-r. You have to say that you can't copy an entire disc onto a dvd-r and that all copies look like someone filmed it in a theater.

YES! I *knew* this would make it to the market this year! Now, how long will it take for DVD Studio Pro to make the update?!

I won't be getting this drive as I want to wait for Pioneers combo drive (I prefer -R over +R...). I've just had more luck with compatablility.

You may have a long wait. I've read Pioneer's -R dual layer format was having some compatibility problems, and it may take them longer to perfect the format. I would say +R dual layered will probably be more compatible with current DVD players, and will probably wind up as the format of choice.

No problem with the actual product really, but how about the fact that he's false advertising or that he's making money off of something other people made (I realize that sounded like those awful pirate ads before movies) or that it would drive normal DVD prices up? I don't know, I've gotten bootlegs before and one or two of 'em took me a while to realize they were boots. I'd rather give my money to the studio and a retailer than to some guy like me sitting around making these.

This is the ultimate solution to bootlegging, and is actually why DVD is making tons of money while CD sales are on a steady slide...
