Ransom S.E. Is it Anamorphic??

Hey guys quick question, I see that Ransom SE is coming out this tuesday, is it anamorphic??? DVD Empire says Yes, THe Box does not mention anything about enhanced for widescreen, and DVD Review.com says its not. What gives, is it or is it not? also if not whats the point of rereleasing??? Its not my favorite movie, but i figured if it comes out i'll get it if its anamorphic cause the current release is not, But it scares me, because I need to replace Crimson Tide and if they pull this stuff now, we'll propably wont get that or Con Air or Enemy of the State?

Mel Gibson is pretty popular right now. 'Man Without a Face' was also just re-released a few weeks ago.

unforgivable in this day and age.

In case there's any doubt, I have this title in hand and have verified it's NON-anamorphic. At least I got a free ticket to Ladykillers inside of it.

Painkiller 03-20-04 02:15 AM

Ugh! I didn't buy the original release in the hope that an SE would be released. What good is an SE in 2004 if it isn't anamorphic? This is just stupid and I won't buy this title.

This SE was done years ago. It was re-released in every other region except for R1. R3 got DTS as well...but not anamorphic.

Tarantino 03-20-04 10:32 AM

Go multi region.

The R2 and R4 SE's are pretty much exactly the same (and ARE anamorphic).

The R3 release is NOT anamorphic, but features a DTS track.

Take your pick. I love my R4 SE.

DonnachaOne 03-20-04 10:40 AM

The cads.

It's missing the much longer laserdisc cut too, isn't it?

Yes it is.

FYI...R3 is NTSC. The others are PAL.

TylerDurden_73 03-20-04 01:31 PM

On Disney's release ( last year) of Alive:30th Anniversary Addition They milabeled it as Widescreen 1.85:1, when it is Anamorphic and no mention on the label.

Disney has a history of Mislabeling their DVD's, Has anyone addressed this in a review of the SE for Ransom?
I have to admit....A non-anamorphic release is down right retarded.

digitalfreaknyc 03-20-04 01:48 PM

There is no mislabeling because the box doesn't say it's 16x9.

People are just pissed off that it's not. ;)

Yes, and that 18 extra minutes improves the film immensely. I didn't much care for the movie in the theater but the director's cut makes for a much more polished film. So still sticking with my LD.

Tarantino 03-20-04 03:19 PM

I'm guessing that the 18 extra minutes aren't included in the deleted scenes?

If not, I'd love to see the longer cut, but the absence of a laserdisc player in my pad pretty much puts a halt to that.

Axorr 03-20-04 05:20 PM

yikes... I guess that's another laser-disc I can't get rid of...

Thanks for saving me from yet another DVD purchase, Disney!!

matome 03-20-04 06:28 PM

Yep, glad I've got my LD as well. I was gonna pick this up for the anamorphic transfer (no interest in extras), so it looks like I saved some cash.

My region 4 special edition says letterbox on the back. Thats not anamorphic is it?

digitalfreaknyc 03-20-04 10:25 PM

R4 is anamorphic i believe. Is it from Australia?

yes it is and its anamorphic.

jough 03-21-04 04:31 PM

This is ridiculous. How do they even have the sheer NERVE to call this a "Special Edition" when it's not anamorphic is just absurd.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL? No extra footage, crappy transfer - BOO to BVHV on this one.

digitalfreaknyc 03-21-04 07:22 PM

There actually IS extra footage. Just not contained in the movie. It's very much a special edition. Just doesn't have an anamorphic transfer...

As was pointed out, this special edition was done a long time ago. But its release has much more to its being a companion SE to Splash, which also was directed by Ron Howard. Their co-release is because of Howard, not Gibson. Splash and Ransom are the only two Disney films he has directed.

jough 03-21-04 11:04 PM

Um, The Man Without a Face was directed by Mel Gibson.

MarcinL 03-22-04 12:48 AM

Man I Don't care who directed what, its been 7 years since DVD has been out, Widescreen Tv's are mainstream almost and these people are still releasing non-anamorphic transfers, WTF?

Um, this thread is about the Ransom SE, and that's what my reply was about.

chesola 03-22-04 10:05 AM

Wow, there's absolutely no excuse for a major studio releasing a non-anamorphic transfer at this point.

No sale.

According to www.dvdcompare.net the Thailand R3 is NTSC, but the Korean R3, which I believe is PAL

flashburn 03-22-04 11:35 AM

Add me to the list of people not buying it because of its Non-Anamorphic transfer.

Korean R3 releases are NTSC.

Artman 03-22-04 12:46 PM

With the poor reviews and lack of B&M sales i'll be passing for now. I'll wait for a price drop, or get a different region dvd.

folgersnyourcup 03-22-04 03:42 PM

I'm glad I checked this thread. It saved me about 17 dollars or so.

typecase 03-23-04 06:27 PM

Gees, when I first saw this thread, I ignored it because I thought it was referring to the old non-anamorphic version. Little did I know it was the new SE I was planning on getting. Buena Vista HV really sucks! First Ed Wood, then a non anamorphic release in 2004! Pathetic. :(

mdc3000 03-24-04 08:09 AM

I am shocked that they didn't do a new transfer. I picked up Splash, but Ransom is a no go!
