Silver Streak and Night of the Comet
I know that several months ago, on either DVD Talk's release list or some other fairly reliable release list, Night of the Comet was listed with a release date.
What is the status of that? Obviously the date has passed by now, because this was a few months ago. You cannot find a copy anywhere so it must have been a mistake. Anything any of you can pass on about this title? Also, I've never seen a word about Richard Pryor's Silver Streak being released on DVD...anybody ever hear of anything on this title as well? All info is greatly appreciated. Cheers! Todd |
Hey, two other titles: Convoy and Damnation Alley...any clues as to the release of these two titles?
Thanks again, Todd |
When asked about the film during the January 2004 HTF talk with Fox, Peter Staddon was initially non-commital... along the lines of "Silver Streak would be a great title to put out..." Later on, he said "Jumpin Jack (Flash) would be a good title to put out with the Silver Streak in a budget line comedy promotion." Read into this what you will.

Thanks for the update on SS...its a classic and one of my favorite movies of all time. The bathroom scene is classic 70s.

Convoy, Night Of The Comet, Monster Squad, KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park and The Final Countdown were all coming out from a company with questionable business practices, making DVDs of movies they dont own the rights to, and they seemed to have gotten into some legal trouble over it. there are a few threads about this.
some of those DVDs have gotten out but they are very crappy and i wouldnt bother hunting them down. |
Can't wait for Silver Streak either. I just introduced a 16mm screening of it a few weeks ago. Great, wacky 70's fun.

Is there any connection between JJF and Silver Streak, aside from an apparent idiot that thinks these should be packaged together? JJF sucked and from jumping back and forth between the specs on the SS VHS and JJF VHS I cannot see any connection aside from being comedies with a black comedian.

Just to follow up:
I bought a Convoy DVD from a seller on eBay for a total of about $10, new and from Pacific Home Entertainment. This is widescreen. I have a Panasonic plasma TV. Let me tell you that the picture quality for this movie is the best I have ever seen for this movie. It blows to hell all VHS copies I've ever seen of this movie. The sound has something to be desired. But the sound isn't obnoxious, just isn't perfect. But far better than VHS. If you want this movie on DVD the price paid was very reasonable for what I received. |

Unless you have a 16x9 tv- DO NOT buy Convoy!! There was a long thread about this. It was mastered incorrectly or screwed up someway that I've never seen on over 2,000 dvds. It will look anamorphic on a 16x9 set, but on a 4x3 set the 2:35:1 picture is compressed & looks more like 1:85:1. It looks like you have your player set to a 16x9 tv. The image is compressed- on a 16x9 set the compressed 4x3 image gets stretched to the sides, making the proportions correct again. So it will look anamorphic on a 16x9 set (although I would hardly call the picture quality even decent), but on a 4x3 set it will be compressed/distorted & there's no way to make it look right. It looks like they just copied an anamorphic version (some people said R4 or R2?), but either didn't have the equipment or just forgot to encode it so the players don't read it as anamorphic. And since this was their last release before they disappeared (after being challenged on their rights to Final Countdown & before they could release the KISS movie) it seems like the company was just shady all around.
