Pre 1960s horror dvds w/good extras

What are some good pre-60s monster, sea disaster, horror movies with good extras, preferably commentaries. Like 20,000 leagues under the sea: SE, Jekyll Hyde double feature are some of the ones I am interested in.

Thanx

Start with the Monster Legacy set thats coming out next month for sure. The Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde double feature disc you mention has a great commentary.

I also recommend

Phantom of the Opera (1929) Milestone Ultimate Edition (commentary and too many other things to list)
Old Dark House (has 2 commentaries and interview)
White Zombie (commentary and Interview with Lugosi short and TV interview with Lugosi)
Most Dangerous Game: Criterion (commentary)

Um, I don't believe the Monster Legacy discs are going to include the bonus features that were included with the previous Universal SEs (for Frankenstein, Bride, etc.) ALL those SEs have terrific bonus materials: Frank, Bride, Drac, Wolf Man, Invisible Man, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera '43, The Mummy, and A&C Meet Frankenstein.

In addition to those titles and the ones listed by darkside, I recommend HOUSE OF WAX.

And, if you're willing to broaden your scope to include early 60s horrors as well you can add...
CARNIVAL OF SOULS (Criterion)
THE HAUNTING (original version, of course)
BLACK SUNDAY
THE WHIP AND THE BODY
THE TINGLER
PSYCHO
PEEPING TOM (Criterion)
And nearly all the Anchor Bay Hammer discs
The Allday TALES OF FRANKENSTEIN disc - tons of bonus features

And the delightful Something Weird oddity THE MONSTERS CRASH THE PAJAMA PARTY, which is like a bunch of special features in search of a movie

Plus, if you want to include sci fi...
THE BLOB (Criterion)
FIEND WITHOUT A FACE (Criterion)
IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE -- really, it's a great disc.

Fortunately they are. Universal has officially listed the contents and they will have all the previous documentaries and commentaries plus 3 new featurettes.

Still, if you can somehow finagle the original collection, at least for the other titles included, that's how I'd go. Good news on the above though.

I'd also reccommend The Beast from 20,000 fathoms.

Frankly, I'm baffled by how they're going to cram all that content into 2 discs, even double-sided! Although it seems that some of the documentaries will be left off (for instance, the Frankenstein and Wolf Man docs are not listed).

And Josh is right about BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. Most of the Harryhausen discs are very good, too. I forgot about those.

7th Voyage of Sinbad.
Very nice DVD. Not really Horror, per se, but nice nontheless.

They are replacing 8 DVD9s with 6 discs that can be up to DVD-18s.

There is plenty of room and nothing other than the Wolf Man 7 minute still photo gallery and possibly the short text production notes and bios is missing. Plus you get the 3 Stephen Sommers discussions (may not be a big deal and just Van Helsing hype) and most importantly House of Dracula never on DVD before.

Complete listings from DVD Times.

Dracula: The Legacy Collection - Disc One (DVD9) houses the 1931 version of Dracula complete with the following features:

* Stephen Sommers on Universal's Classic Monster: Dracula
* The Road to Dracula (Dracula Documentary)
* Poster Montage

* Audio Commentary with Film Historian David J. Skal
* New Score by Philip Glass Performed by the Kronos Quartet

Disc Two (DVD18) houses Dracula (Original Spanish Version), Dracula's Daughter, Son of Dracula and House of Dracula along with the following bonus features:

* Introduction to the Spanish Version of Dracula by Lupita Tovar Kohner

Frankenstein: The Legacy Collection - Disc One (DVD9) houses Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein complete with the following features:

* Theatrical Trailers
* Audio Commentary on Frankenstein with Rudy Behlmer
* Audio Commentary on Bride of Frankenstein with Film Historian Scott MacQueen

My bad - I missed the listing for FRANKENSTEIN FILES and MONSTER BY MOONLIGHT.

Anyhow -- this is good news. Although, since I already have all the SEs, the only one I'm going to bother with is the DRACULA set, to get HOUSE OF DRACULA.

Now if they'd just give us a "Legacy Set" for the Invisible Man series!
