Best WWII Documentary
 

Im looking to pick up a few WWII Documenatry DVDs and was wondering what are some good titles out there. Im especially looking for some Pearl Harbor ones. I know theres an excellent one from the History Channel and a few from Madacy that im not too sure of.

I'm not sure about the "best" (although I think the World at War series usually considered one of the best) I wanted to point out though there are a couple of new ones coming out w/ the rerelease of Saving Private Ryan. Also, I remember I really enjoyed the one about Midway from National Geographic.

Victory At Sea is a good older documentary that was recently released by The History Channel.

Anyways, this one's kind of old, but it's hands down the best doc ever done on WWII (it's a great dvd, to boot):

It's a bit Euro-heavy, and only glosses over the Pacific War, but it more than makes up for that by doing everything else right. From having interviews with major participants, to being narrated by Lawrence Olivier - it's completley facinating and eternally rewatchable.

PBS had a recent one called "The Perilous Fight: America's WWII in Color" that was really good. It's on DVD.

I cast another vote for World at War,it is the definative vidieo set of world war two on the market today,probably one of the most expensive too,but you get what you pay for and this 30 hour series comes in second to none.I managed to pick it up for 59 dollars and consider it to be one of the best dvd buys of my entire life

I have Victory at Sea -- fantastic set, well produced and narriated.

A few years back on PBS, they had a show called Battlefield where they would take two hours and document one battle. I really would like to see this out on DVD.

I imagine they are about in line w/ the other Madacy stuff, straight from video xfers w/ no extras.

Both of these are from Goodtimes, which is about the same thing as Madacy ;) Haven't used bestprices.com myself so I don't know anything about them though.

Another vote for The World at War. I also paid about $60. Be warned there is a lot of actual WWII footage and it isn't in the greatest shape.

I am VERY interest in his. I tried to search for what you mentioned came up empty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are looking for something on the War in the Pacific you will not find anything better than Victory at Sea.

The World at War is one of the best.

If you get both of these you will have two excellent sets and probably will only have need for documentaries made with specific battles in mind. The history channel is a great source for the specific stuff and National Geographic has a good one on Pearl Harbor.

I have -A Century of Warfare-covers all the wars of the 20th century-haven't watched it yet-put out by The History Channel.

I would agree with the many votes for World at War...pick that one up first. The Victory At Sea set is terrific for the naval aspect, and National Geographic has a nice 3 pack including their Pearl Harbor and Midway docs. The Century of Warfare is a great set, but not if you are only going to be interested in the WWII part. Go with the World at War set first.

Don't be so quick to jump on your moral high horse. "Triumph of the Will" is a very important historical film. One can appreciate its significance without endorsing the Nazi party, for God's sake.

Another vote for "The World At War". I've seen it about three times and its a must have for a serious collection.
