Did ROTK win 11 Oscars.... or was it 12?
I just read this at HTF posted by Kevin_H:
RETURN OF THE KING did not win 11 Oscars, it won 12. 11 that you saw last night, plus a technical achievement Oscar for "their groundbreaking implementations of practical methods for rendering skin and other translucent materials using subsurface scattering techniques". (according to imdb, http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0504784/awards) If you count that one, and I see no reason why you wouldn't, it is an Oscar, then RETURN OF THE KING broke the BEN-HUR and TITANIC record. Can someone explain? What is your opinion... did LOTR ROTK actually beat out Titanic and Ben-Hur? |
I would say yes then, it's the new champ.

Titanic probably won some technical ones as well.
I believe companies, not films, win technical awards. |
That award is not an Oscar, it is a Technical Achievement Award, just like it says.
LOTR won 11 Oscars, not 12, technical achievement awards are a whole different thing. |

Not completely true. My understanding was that 3 real true genuine Oscars were given out at the Science and Technical blowout bash. The rest were, as you say, technical achievement awards. Did LOTR win one of those 3 Oscars is the question? |
A simple Google search will give you the answer:
http://www.oscars.org/scitech/2003/index.html Two OscarŪ statuettes were among the 11 awards presented at the gala black tie dinner. Digidesign, a leading manufacturer of computer-based digital audio production systems, received an Oscar for the creation and development of the Pro ToolsŪ digital audio workstation. Bill Tondreau of Kuper Controls also received an Oscar for his significant advancements with robotic camera systems, which resulted in motion control becoming an integral part of the field of visual effects. The Gordon E. Sawyer Award, also an Oscar statuette, was presented during the ceremony to Peter D. Parks for his lifetime of technological contributions to the industry. |

This has nothing to do with DVDs. And it looks like the question has been answered. Closing thread.
