How do you clean/dust your collection?
I am trying to find a good, quickie solution to keeping my collection free of dust and other mites that might accumulate.
I live in a small apt. with hardwood floors and some DVD's are close to the floor where a lot of dust collects. I do my best to clean, but can't always do the complete routine, so I am just looking for a good tool or a real good dust thingie that can clear those DVD's all over. I have this scruffy thing with scruffies all over, but I don't know if it does quite the job. Anyone have a proven solution that seems to work for them? This might seem like an inane thread, but I figured this is where to go for the ones who take care of their stuff or at least try to like I. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. (Just so you know how my collection lies...I have many in my TV stand, on the sides, open faced with three shelves on each side that holds about 20 on each shelf. Then I have two DVD stands that are just regular cheapies that you would find at Best Buy or something.) |
Buy an air cleaner. I have several and it takes quite a bit longer for dust to build up, if at all.

lol I just use a plain duster... don't take 5 mintues.. or get a plastic sheet and cover your dvds if it REALLY bothers you

Depending on what I'm doing I use a vacuum with an attachment, a duster, or a swiffer duster.

one thing that I find essential...is dvd case sleeves. go HERE and scroll down to find these babies. I just bought another 500, although I have oddsized sleeves made elsewhere. snappers dont fit in these...but you can get them at other places. the dvd and the case remain dust and dirt free.
aside from that....I dust every few days with a simple, soft dust brush. |
I've used a feather-duster to do the tops because of the close proximity to the shelf above. When I get a wild hair and need to do thorough cleaning, I take 'em all out and wipe 'em off with a soft cloth.

I second the Swiffer Duster! It's thin enough to go right over the tops of my DVDs and they attract the dust instead of just spreading it around. I use them on my equipment too!

Dust?????? Please, I'm a bachelor.

Simple feather duster which I rinse out every week.

I just use my dirty hands. :(

I dust for fingerprints whenever I think anyone has been messin' with them.

I don't dust at all. If my DVD is dirty when I take it out to play, I clean it with a lens solution. I hope that doesn't damage my discs.

Each of my DVD's is hermetically sealed in high-grade SUV-protectant dust-resistant plastic only available from the science labs of the French Army. They use the plastic to protect their guns...since they don't use them, anyway. Sure, I can't play the discs, but I can look at them on the shelf, and I can sleep better at night knowing that NOTHING is going to harm them.
Just kidding. I use a feather duster. |
I use the Grab-it dust coth thingies. They attract the dust quickly but don't have any sort of chemicals to leave a residue behind. In fact, that's what I use to clean all of my electronics as well.

Vacuum your floor more often.

I use...wait, shit, I don't dust.

I use a simple dust cloth.
I bought some fabric from Wal-Mart a few years back and cut it up to use as dust cloths for multiple things. One is for my DVD collection, the other for the top of my TV and stereo, the other for my entertainment centers, and what hasn't been cut is wadded up in a drawer inside my armroire. Having different cloths for different things may seem odd, but I do it so that dust doesn't build up from one thing and get all over another. Just buy some fabric with a nice consistency to it, cut it up, and you're set. Works like a charm for me. |
