this review doesn't cover the 4 disc one version, because isn't the 4 disc version have both dts and all of the extras that new 2 disc version lacks?

RockStrongo 05-24-04 02:32 PM

Maybe someone said this already, if so then I apologize...

Does anyone know if the special features are all on disk two?

Is it the same vid and audio quality of the first release?

If that is the case, then I will buy the 2 disk and swap disk one with my current DTS version.

"All of the extras are located on the second disc, which is comprised solely of a new 75-minute documentary divided into the requisite little parts: Introduction (2 min.) features Spielberg on set, recounting his first memories of the war; Looking into the Past (7 min.) tells us how Spielberg and Hanks were initially reluctant to test their friendship by working together but were too compelled by the material to say no; Miller and His Troop (8 min.) examines the development of the story, characters and script; Boot Camp (7 min.) reminds me of why I never joined the military; Making Saving Private Ryan (22 min.) is just what you would expect by its title; Recreating Omaha Beach (18 min.) dissects the acclaimed opening sequence; Music and Sound Effects (14 min.) is an interview with John Williams and sound designer Gary Rydstrom; and Parting Thoughts (1 min.) is Spielberg again, reminding us how powerful an experience making the movie was. All of the above are presented in full screen and offer optional English, French and Spanish subtitles.

Shockingly for a major studio release in this day and age, there are no other extras at all - no trailers, filmographies, production notes, stills or premiere footage. A major oversight."

Thanks for the info. :)

I will skip the boxset and just buy the 2 disk. Then, I will swap disk 1 with my current DTS version.

Rock, note that the boxset includes features not included on the new 2 disc set. The extras on the 2 disc look pretty weak, you may want to rent before the double-dip.

Can anyone deny or confirm that the transfer and audio are the same? Im trying to decide if I can sell my DTS copy.

bboisvert 05-24-04 04:15 PM

DVDFile's review says that it "utilizes the same high-definition master as before". Doesn't say the *transfer* is the same, but it certainly implies that there are no differences.

That wouldn't make sense. The other two discs in the box set are not related to SPR. I ordered the box set from amazon (which already shipped) and I'm regretting it already. I can't believe they would't even include the trailers with the new version.

They are related somewhat. Spielberg produced the documentaries on those discs. And Tom Hanks hosts the Shooting War documentary, which includes actual footage of the D-Day assault and interviews with the men who shot it.

Both feature-length documentaries are fantastic and a fine complement to SPR.

Since the boxed set is only $12 more than the 2-disc set, I'll probably pick it up. I never did get the DTS version of the original, so it'll be nice to crank that one up.

NoirTech 05-25-04 08:34 PM

What does the boxset look like? I went to my local Best Buy and they couldn't find any copies even though their computer said they had 10 in inventory. Man, aren't 10 boxsets of a 3 movies a bit much to lose? heh

The boxset is inconveniently closed on all 6 sides, similar to the Desperado and El Mariachi boxset. This means, you have to open the set like a cereal box every time you want to insert or remove a DVD. When my set arrives from amazon, I'm likely to take a pair of scissors and cut out a side of the box.

Deep discount has the 2 disc listed as DTS, can somebody confirm?

darmok 05-25-04 11:51 PM

no, the box is not closed on all sides (like the rodriguez 2-pack); it's a slipcase, with a permanent opening where you can slide out the dvds, just like any other regular slipcase.

EDIT ***my mistake...the box IS closed on all four edges***

Huh? The box my friend bought is closed on all sides like cupon described.

tek2k 05-26-04 12:07 AM

anyone buy the 2 disc hoping dts would be on it? i did, and was sadly mistaken. those sneaky bastards put a MADE IN MEXICO sticker right where they list the sound specs. :(

btw, does the 4 disc version have the same case as the 2 disc version? i know it comes in a box, but is the movie inside the box in the same case as the 2 disc version? TIA

No it isn't, it's closed on all sides.

No, plenty of people have posted here and elsewhere that the two-disc set is Dolby Digital only and you have to buy the four-disc set to get dts.

Inside the four-disc set is the same "Saving Private Ryan" case that is used in the two-disc version, with the exception of the details on the audio tracks of course.

What's wrong with "Made In Mexico"? Did yours get taco sauce stain on the disc or something? ;)

I noticed that lots of new releases from Universal are made in Mexico now.

As others are also wondering, does the 2-Disc version have the DTS track? I bought it today, but DTS is NOT listed on the box (as far as I could tell). Is this a mistake or is the DTS track only available in the 4 Disc set?

Although I don't have the set or the 2disc version myself, I think that the DTS track is only available in the WWII boxset.

flix1 05-26-04 10:59 AM

... to answer my own question. In the Bargains forum discussion on the new set, they state the DTS track is only available in the Box set.

aerobson 05-26-04 11:00 AM

There is a DTS one disc version available. I did a quick search of a few sites and couldn't find it. It might be OOP, but it was available at the same time as the original release, just as a separate DTS version.

MMmmmmm, tacos.

flashh80 05-26-04 12:56 PM

I've only seen screen shots but does anyone know what the cases will look like for the box set? Are they seperate keep cases or custome?

I've been waiting for a DTS version to come out with "extras". Looks like the only way I'm going to get this (thanks to those bastards) is by forking over $35+ and getting the WWII collections.
