Will all non-anamorphic dvds eventually get re-released as anamorphic?

Just wondering. There are many titles I want that are non-anamorphic, but I am wondering if everything will get an anamorphic transfer at some point, since eventually everyone will have a widescreen tv.

Scream
The Abyss
The Truman Show
Armageddon
older Criterion releases and many others...

BlackBeauty92 02-15-04 05:10 PM

i think Criterion is "trying" to re-visit their older non-anamoprhic titles.... but it depends on their contract i guess

but yes, i do agree that allot of quality movies out there that still need anamorphic transfer (or treatment that they deserve)

hey, UNIVERSAL!!! WHERE IS MY JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING ANAMORPHIC?!?!?!?!

bastards

Can't forget The Apostle with Duvall...A gem of a movie with one horrible transfer

I love my Robocop CC, just wish it was anamorphic with DD 5.1.

Rammsteinfan 02-15-04 07:16 PM

THE THING is in such need of an upgrade! Keep the same extras but redo it in anamorphic! Universal, ya bastards! Gimme gimme gimme!

sirbrady 02-15-04 07:55 PM

The Thing really does need it, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon. Or if a new edition comes, it may lose some extras. A nice and loaded 2 disc SE would be nice

Then the Region 3 version is the one you want.

Simpson Purist 02-15-04 08:31 PM

Goodfellas and The Manchurian Candidate are in need of newly remastered anamorphic transfers.

DavidH 02-15-04 08:33 PM

I suspect some titles will never get re-released on the current DVD format just because the studios won't make any money, and could even lose money, depending on the title.

The titles you mentioned probably will get re-released as they are bigger ticket items.

Regarding Criterion....Armageddon would be almost perfect if it were just anamorphic.

BlackBeauty92 02-15-04 09:16 PM

oh. almost forgot the other bastard, Paramount...
where's my ESCAPE FROM LA ANAMORPHIC you bastid!!

:)

Squirrel God 02-15-04 11:27 PM

I'd like to see the Panned & Scanned releases done in at least the OAR before they revisit the non-anamorphics.

D-Ball 02-16-04 01:02 AM

To get back onto the original topic, No all titles will not get re-released with anamorphic transfers. However the ones you mentioned might be likely candidates for one. Criterion has stated that they would like provide anamorphic transfers for some of their earlier releases, and Buena Vista has has announced a new Collector's Series which might provide some new transfers. My advice would be to buy the movies you like now, and if new versions are released, sell the old one and buy the new one.

Scream is the only non-anamorphic movie in my collection.

I'd buy anamorphic versions of The Thing, Goodfellas, and The Truman Show in a flash.

Grubert 02-16-04 08:38 AM

Anamorphically-enhanced discs of Scream, Truman Show, Escape from LA and Armageddon are available for you if you go multiregion.

TheHistorian 02-16-04 01:25 PM

No, they won't.

QuikSilver 02-16-04 03:32 PM

Scream
Good Will Hunting
Pretty Woman

These are the DVD's I have that are non-anamorphic. I hope the studios will go back and redo them.

sinned 02-16-04 03:37 PM

Titanic is not anamorphic I believe.

Pretty Woman was re-released as a 10th anniversary edition. Is that version anamorphic or not?

Both of them are in letterbox.

GuessWho 02-16-04 04:39 PM

my non's that will be double-dipped when the SE's come out

Top Gun
Titanic
Clerks

My Happy Gilmore is full frame (grrr) but my Good Will Hunting is the anamorphic canadian version (yay)

DavidH 02-16-04 05:19 PM

It's too bad really because a couple of those non-anamorphic DVDs look pretty good (Titanic, Criterion Armageddon). If they were anamorphic, you would hear no complaints about how they look.

I agree about The Thing. I would love to see this one done right.

Bill Geiger 02-16-04 07:31 PM

I have the R4 Pretty Woman SE and it is anamorphic (not the best looking anamorphic picture mind you).

Shroud 02-17-04 01:33 AM

True Lies needs to be Anamorphic!!!

joliom 02-17-04 08:03 AM

A lot of the titles mentioned so far are already on the slate. Goodfellas, The Manchurian Candidate, and True Lies are all supposedly going to see re-releases according to the studios (though no specific dates have yet been announced). And does anyone really think that there won't be super-duper special edition re-releases for Titanic and Top Gun? I mean you're talking about two of the biggest most popular films of all time there. It will happen in time. The bigger question is will we see anamorphic re-releases of more obscure films - those that weren't even moderate Hollywood hits? Will there ever be a 16:9 enhanced Slumber Party Massacre for instance?

Mr. Cinema 02-17-04 11:21 PM

Do non-anamorphic dvds look like crap on a widescreen tv? I'm asking because I only have a 27" and don't really benefit from anamorphic enhancement. Does the Armageddon Criterion dvd still look good on a widescreen tv even though it's non-anamorphic?
