The DVD release will be the 1997 SEs, without any further tweaks, according to the press release (we'll see if this is true or not when the set comes out).
So it looks like "Ain't it Cool News" was "Ain't We Full of Crap News" yet again.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that Lucasfilm is understating the improvements in this release. That way we'll all be pleasantly surprised at the unmentioned fixes and will complain less about the revisionism.

I don't need to tell you that the orginals have a place for those that were first entertain by them. Lucas is being a pompous self rightous jerk for ignoring those folks.
Film, like any work of art, belongs to the viewer once completed.

He created the movie he can do with it what he likes. I am so excited to see a real date. Like others have posted I bet 95% of people who say they will not buy it will be the first ones in line.

Chill out "original version" people! Believe it or not- you didn't make the movies and they weren't made specifically for you.
without the fans that went apes#it over these back in '77, there wouldn't have been sequels.
the sequels were made for the people that were there at the time, not for some hypothetical generation down the road.
just like Casablanca wasn't made for tv or home video or a dvd SE.
it was made for the war-time audience that was going to buy a ticket to see it.

Well obviously I'm excited about the release. While I'm disappointed about the lack of the original versions being included I'm not going to cry about it. As it is there are only two sequences added for the Special Editions that make me cringe (Jedi Rocks and the Vader Shuttle sequence in Empire). Besides, once this set is out, perhaps enough fan demand will cause Lucasfilm to release barebones editions of the original versions at a later date. Right now I'm only concerned about the content of this boxed set. While I would have preferred two disc sets for each film to go along with the prequels, I'm still happy with the set up of the set. The commentaries are what i really wanted and if the documentaries are anything like the ones on the Indiana Jones set then I'll be happy. My only real concern is the inclusion of deleted scenes from the original trilogy. No mention of this has been made as of yet but I'm hoping they'll be announced as part of the extras. I know i'm not the only one who's dying to see the Biggs scenes on Tatooine amongst others. Considering that the Biggs scenes were included on the CD-ROM Star Wars: Behind the Magic, I think it'd be a bad move not to have them included on the dvds. Here's hoping.

I'm going to buy. While I wouldn't consider myself a fangirl, I did take the day off from work to buy PM tickets back in the day. I currently have no Star Wars movies in my collection (no original or SE on VHS). All of my friends have these on VHS so I was actually waiting for the DVDs. I am certainly a bit disappointed that they are only SE but I've waited so long already. Gonna miss the original Ewok ending in IV (seriously, I know I might be the only one) the rest of the changes in the SEs are just slightly annoying to me.

Lucas proves again that he is completely out of touch with what the fans want. I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars anymore (the Lord Of The Rings trilogy far surpasses Star Wars in every possible way), but I have been looking forward to the DVD release of these films, because they are such an integral part of my love of film in general. I won't be buying this box set, though, because films released in 1977, 1980 and 1983 should not have CGI in them. Period. I guess I'll just have to buy bootleg DVDs of the original laserdisc editions, since my laserdisc player has taken the same path as Lucas' integrity: into the dustbin.

NEW VIDEO RELEASE SHOULD PLEASE `STAR WARS' PERFECTIONISTS
George Lucas never stops tinkering with his famed "Star Wars" trilogy, the latest evidence being a new video release "available for the last time in its original form."
Available for the last time? Yes, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment says that the reissue will run through Jan. 31, then be removed from the market.
In its original form? That doesn't preclude an expanded version, which Lucas is planning for the series' 20th anniversary in 1997.
The latest release, according to the publicity, was engineered by THX digital mastering to enhance the audio and video quality. It will also contain a lengthy interview of Lucas by "Entertainment Tonight's" Leonard Maltin. Purchase price: $19.98 each; $49.98 for the trio.
Speaking from his Skywalker Ranch in Northern California, George Lucas, at 51 no longer the wunderkind, talked about "Star Wars," past, present and future in a recent interview:
Q. Why this latest video release?
A. I guess it's me finally trying to get things to be right. When "Star Wars" was first released on video, it was in the first pioneering days of video releases. I've always wanted to improve the quality. Through my THX group, we've been working on quality control systems. I wanted to move it into VHS and tape, and this is my chance to do that.
Q. Will you ever be satisfied with the quality?
A. Probably not. We'll always be pushing for a higher-resolution picture and better quality and better quality video sets. Hopefully, the quality in the home will be as good as the quality in the theater.
Q. Is anything added to the film itself?
A. The film is the same, the old version. I'm working on a new version to be released theatrically on the 20th anniversary. It's called Special Edition, and it will have themes that I couldn't get into the film because of time and money constraints. Also improvements in the special effects; those things have bugged me over the years, and I wanted to get it right.

I've never seen the original 3 in their entirety (calm down, I'm not a LOTR freak coming to threadcrap), mainly because I was waiting to see them in the best possible audio and video. Now I don't know what to do. I was 1 when Return of the Jedi came out, so I never got to see them in the original theatrical run. I didn't see the re-releases in '97, but all I kept hearing was how some people loved the changes and others HATED them. I'll most likely buy the SE boxset, but is there anywhere to still get new VHS copies of the originals?

Did anybody catch Howard Stern's comments on the DVD announcements and the prequels? I still can't stop laughing!! He made comments to George Lucas like "it's too late...stupid a**" and "the prequels are so bad, I don't even like the originals anymore". Robin Quivers mentioned how upset the purist are about the release and how the DVDs are the altered SE version, Howard again commented something like, "yeah the versions where Lucas wasn't thinking clearly" not his exact words, but it was definitely something like that....very funny!

Let me just add my .02. I think that maybe Lucas will wait until HD-DVD or Blu-Ray to release the original Trilogy.
Maybe Best Buy will have a Bonus Bonus Disc like they did with Indy?

If that's what you want to do then do it. Nobody cares if bootlegs are bought anyway. At least we know that SW is definately coming out THIS YEAR and not after Episode III. Don't think for a minute though that this will be the ONLY release on DVD. If VHS has proven anything it's that Lucas wants to release this trilogy every 2 years so he can make $$. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 6-9 DVD set of Star Wars much in the way of Alien Quad after Episode III comes out. And who here is not going to buy both? People have replaced far unworthy titles more than once before.

Star Wars fanatics are easily the biggest group of low-lifes ever assembled Seriously, wow.
I am able to sleep at night with this news. I couldn't care how the SE version contains 2.5 seconds of difference that makes the movie trilogy absolutely unwatchable . I'll be there day one to pick it up 'cause it's a damn good trilogy. Everyone needs to really chill out.

Why change a classic?
People who think Star Wars got "better" with the effects changed and all the noise-making animals added are the same ones who think Casablanca would be better if they added helicopters and Rick stole Ilsa.
No, I'll be sticking with my THX Laserdiscs. Not for my own lost childhood, but because I won't subject my children to that kind of pornography.

Stern proves time and time again that all he does is pander to the current popular public opinion. The only reason that chump is able to say that his movie was #1 and was successful is because ROTJ was put off for a week.
