how is the Royal Tenenbaums criterion, I'm thinking of picking that up this saturday. how are the extras?

These threads asking for suggestion are not very helfull. By the time everone has chimed in on what to recommend pretty much every Criterion gets listed. So you're basically in square one.

I say Andrei Rublev and Solaris, just because nobody else has mentiond them. :)

Another vote for The Vanishing.

I'm sure you'll do it anyway, but ignore the negative comments about The Rock and Armageddon . . . they are movies that look to be right up your alley (based on your collection) and Criterion treats them right. Whether or not anyone here agrees with it, Criterion saw some excellence in the genre represented by these two movies. You'll be very happy with them.

As for another recommendation, based on a handful of the other movies that are in your collection, I am going to suggest Brazil. It is a fantastic release of an outstanding movie. Definitely not mainstream, but if you like Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Edward Scissorhands, and Pi, then I think that it might be one that you could enjoy.

Le Cercle Rouge and Rififi are two incredibly cool movies.....and by cool, I mean "cool" in every sense of the word....They set the standard that all those other movies you've seen have since tried to replicate....

Many posts all say movies based on my tastes. Well I am only 17 years old and JUST NOW starting to branch out into other genres of films. When I started collecting three years ago, all I really wanted were action films. Recently I have begun to pick up dramas and independent films. And now I am finally moving into international cinema and would like to gather my own Criterion collection in the coming years as well as keep up on contemporary films (yes action too) that I enjoyed in the theatres. Thanks for all the great input. I'll be sure to get Kurosawa stuff very soon as well as some Hitchcock stuff.

Don't ever let you age stand in the way of film, I was 16 when I got my first Criterion DVD. Ah yes I shall never forget when I came home and popped in 8 1/2 ... *sniff* seems just like yesterday....

The Royal Tenenbaums discs are great. Good solid extras that are actually worth watching, the film looks great, and it's a good movie.

PLUS, you get the added bonus of it being one of the cheaper Criterions on the market, since it was distributed through Buena Vista.

I like most of the Criterions I have. Here are a few that stand out:

Carnival of Souls
Nights of Cabiria
Le Trou
Gimme Shelter

Rules of the Game --- don't waste a single penny on anything else until u get this.

considering Stalker (Tarkovsky best is not on Criterion), you might aswell go for his 2nd best film
