Lost in Translation DVD case

What are y'all's thoughts on the DVD case for Lost In Translation? Took me a couple of minutes to figure out the little tabs.

lesterlong 02-06-04 09:56 PM

Me Like.

PalmerJoss 02-06-04 10:19 PM

I've got a couple dvd's that have them, and so far I don't have any complaints.

ProjectMayhem 02-06-04 10:31 PM

I don't like them. I don't see much of a point.

LasVegasMichael 02-06-04 10:36 PM

Orange County has that as well. It works for me.

The fact that there is no insert, however......

jough 02-06-04 10:51 PM

The Canadian version just uses a regular Amaray case.

How is the U.S. version different?

Cornelius1047 02-06-04 11:09 PM

I remember reading about some other DVD cases that had them on this forum awhile back, but I never got any of the DVDs that had them. This would be my first. It's kinda like a lock for the DVD, where you have to open to tabs first, and then you can open the case (like a normal Amaray) to get to the DVD. I also don't see the point, and while it's not the end of the world, I'm sure I'll forget they're there and try to open it a couple times before remembering.

Just out of curiosity, why do some of you like this?

K

Tony Dvdfan 02-06-04 11:22 PM

I dont really mind them...though every time i try to open it i forget they're there....the only point i can think of is to try to prevent theft, rather than use the security tape on most other dvds.

HistoryProf 02-06-04 11:37 PM

:hscratch:

Mine is just a run-o-the-mill amaray case....what are these tabs you speak of?

starseed 02-06-04 11:46 PM

My copy (from Amazon) is minus "tabs" as well, but I am certainly familiar with them (Orange County, The Bourne Identity, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), and I don't like them.

Jackskeleton 02-06-04 11:47 PM

I'm in the same boat as Brizz. Mine was regular ol' run-o-the-mill amaray. Nothing special about it. Though no insert other then a silly beer ad. :p

00soul 02-07-04 01:03 AM

the case looks like this

This has been discussed a few times. They seem to be specific to Walmart. I have it on the Scorpion King.

Tazwolff 02-07-04 01:10 AM

Mine from Amzon also has no tabs. However my The Bourne Identity from Waly World had them and I cut them off with a razor as soon as I got home. I like to open my DVDs with one hand.

Tsar Chasm 02-07-04 01:15 AM

700+ dvds. I've never seen this case. My LiT is a normal case.

00soul 02-07-04 01:18 AM

i havent seen it until LIT also. i was guessing it might be some kind of funky japanese case to go with the movie.

Cornelius1047 02-07-04 01:30 AM

If these are specific to Wal-Mart, then my store (Best Buy) got all of their widescreen DVDs. And I mean all of them. There are no widescreen versions of this at Wal-Mart, you dig?

i got mine from best buy. and i saw the movie at ralphs (grocery store) and they had the tabs also

jarofclay73 02-07-04 02:16 AM

I bought mine at Costco and it has no tabs. My Blue Crush DVD has the tabs and I bought it from Wal-Mart. But that's the only DVD I have that has tabs.

By the way, my Lost In Translation DVD HAS an insert, but it's a partial advertisement for Kirin Beer. But, hey...an insert is an insert, right?

Jackskeleton 02-07-04 02:48 AM

I wouldn't count that as an insert.

It doesn't have any sort of chapter listings or anything. it's a simple "win a trip to tokyo" beer contest.

I'm not one to normally bitch about inserts.. infact, I usually make fun of those who do.. But an (partial) insert.. this is not!

jough 02-07-04 02:53 AM

I've never seen one of those "tabbed" cases - my Bourne Identity (and every other title mentioned) just came in a regular Amaray, but then again, I don't shop at Walmart very much.

Supermallet 02-07-04 03:09 AM

I got mine at Amoeba records in Los Angeles (about as far as you can get from WalMart in terms of the type of store), and it had those tabs. I think they're neat. I'm sure they'll snap off.

fillerbunny 02-07-04 03:31 AM

No Wal-Mart in sight around NYC...
So am I the only one who got the funky Lost In Translation case from Amazon?
This is the first time I've seen this case. I felt so dumb seeing the little "Open-->" clips after I spent 5 minutes trying to open the damn thing.

MGBGT 02-07-04 07:57 AM

I felt like such a boob for not knowing how to open the friggin' thing! LOL!! I seriously thought for a moment that it was a security latch that needed assistance from FYE officials--I think after spotting the word "open" with the arrows pointing in the direction where you pull the tabs away was when it hit me.

I thought people only did this with porn DVDs :D

onebyone 02-07-04 08:17 AM

I didn't get mine from Wal Mart, and mine had them too. This was the first time I saw this case. In other words, I too felt like a Boob because I was like, "what the hell" and couldn't figure it out for a few minutes. I thought it was defective or something. **Shakes head at self.**

matome 02-07-04 08:22 AM

LOL, So how long before these things fall off?

basaro 02-07-04 09:19 AM

I've seen these before on a friends dvd - might have been Bourne Identity, I'm not entirely sure.

I don't like them and I don't see the point of the tab.
If the tabs are there as a theft prevention alternative to security tape, they won't perform well.

For a thief:
It would be easier for them to open the two tabs than to peel off or cut three security stickers, thus creating more theft, and a need to develop even more security alternatives.

For a consumer:
After you buy it, get it home and open it, the security device is still there(tabs). At least with the security stickers, once you remove them, they're gone. The stickers are not getting in the consumer's way after they buy it, yet the tabs do.

It's not like the tabs make it hard to open, it just takes more time. And for what purpose?
Why is there a need to lock dvd cases? What's next, jewel case locks? Geez!

It's just another nuisance. Over-engineering kills me :(

bjh_18 02-07-04 10:38 AM

I remember the first dvd I picked up that had the tabs on the side - Narc. I kept trying to open it and open it, and it wouldn't budge. Finally I gave it one hard tug and the things popped off. Ever since then, I check to see if they're there.

Practice makes perfect. ;)

Grizzly 02-07-04 09:19 PM

thank you for posting those photos, 00soul. i've wanted to see what it looks like (since i haven't gotten any DVDs with that packaging, LIT included). seems unnecessary.. not like other, regular cases fly open or anything.. and having something like that probably just makes those cases more expensive to manufacture and buy. nobody wins.

ProjectMayhem 02-07-04 09:27 PM

I got Lost in Translation at Wal*Mart and Best Buy (Widescreen) and they both had these tabs. Weird, considering I thought these were only available at Wal*Mart (I got Seabiscuit with these tabs, too. I also heard of others getting these). Now I'm assuming it will be a common thing. Sure as hell beats taking off two extra security seals, I'd say.

You obviously haven't seen the film or else you would remember the first few minutes of Scarlette ass on screen. ;)

LOL!!
I have to admit that even though it seems quite gratuitous for them to have Scarlett's butt (covered by see-through panties) staring at you at the beginning of the film, I'd be remiss in saying I didn't feel warmly welcomed!

Ron_Bangel 02-07-04 10:29 PM

I thought they were a totally useless waste of plastic so I removed them.

Tazwolff 02-08-04 12:52 AM

I think I'll take my cut-off tabs and send them back to Universal.

Actually, this would probably be more of a pain to the would-be thief. In my experience, the thieves will slash open the longest side of the dvd case and reach in and pull the disc out, leaving all the packaging behind.

The tabs are great because they are hard to open quickly if you're just trying to pry the case apart instead of actually opening it normally.

Me like!

paul.n3w 02-08-04 11:38 PM

I thought the tabs were annoying... I couldn't figure out why I couldn't open the case in an already darkened room :D

(And I bought my dvd with tabbed case at Best Buy)

jough 02-08-04 11:51 PM

Most thieves steal the entire wrapped package, case and all, anyway. The more enterprising ones carry handheld de-magnetizers to kill the security sticker.

Besides, most in-store theft comes from shrinkage (i.e. employees stealing). The security sticker is pointless for retailers, and annoying for consumers. They're only there to asuage retailers' fears about theft.

It sure was one of the great opening frames of a movie. I'm sure it'd make for nice wallpaper :)

Oh, I guess I should comment about the case. I got mine at Target and it didn't have the tabs.
