As a diehard Spielberg fan and general film enthusiast, this movie is a Must Own. Sure I'll probably only watch it once a year, but it's one of those movies that is so moving, so expertly made that I just have to own it.

Add to that, I know a lot of people who have never seen the film. Having it in my collection means that if someone comes over who hasn't seen it, I can bring it out right away and watch it with them. Sure the movie deals with very dark, sad subject matter, but it shows an element of the human spirit that can triumph over evil and features some of the finest performances I've ever seen.

It's not a "hey kids, gather round, it's time to be entertained" kind of movie, but it is certainly one of the most important films in the last 20 years and it's one that I MOST CERTAINLY MUST HAVE IN MY COLLECTION.

I have only seen the movie once and it did make me sad and depressed. But ti is such and amazing and powerful film and one of Speilberg's greatest achievements. I am a Speilberg fan so I will be picking it up because of that and also I think it's a good movie too. But I won't be watching it again and again. I'll pick it up every now and then.

I have never seen the movie. I refused to see it when it came out. I figured it would be a hard movie to sit through since I heard the details of what happened then from my grandparents who were in these concentration camps. The stories they told me made me think if this movie even comes close to what they told me, it would have to be a very disturbing movie.

Today I am on the fence on if I will buy it. I am one of those who has to have like every big movie on dvd. It really sounds like a movie everyone should see once so people will never fall into this sickness that Hitler spread.

For example, I would not personally put a link to my collection on my profile. I accept that people will say they do it because others can see what sort of films they are into and get an idea of where the person is coming from, but in all honesty you cannot deny a slight narcissistic "Hey look at all my movies" element to it?

as opposed to...what, "Hey...dont look at my movies? this is a dvd/film forum...get a grip.

yes...I'm buying the dvd/film. it will sit right along side, "The Hiding Place".

matome 02-05-04 10:33 AM

I won't be getting this.

movielib 02-05-04 10:54 AM

I've watched Schindler's List only twice. Once in the theater when it came out and once on LD. I probably won't watch it again for quite some time.

Nevertheless, it is a great movie that covers one of the most brutal and tragic periods in history while focusing on one person who helped a relative few survive the evil. IMO, it is one of the greatest films of all time.

As TomOpus said, "It's a film I love. That's the only reason I need to own it."

For me there is a lot more to movie collecting than how often I'm going to watch it.

I couldn't not buy Schindler's List.

I'd buy it because of the following:

1. Its a great movie, even though the content is quite depressing
2. I will watch it again, whenever that maybe
3. I'll be able to share this movie to my friends and family who haven't seen it yet.

This movie is highly overrated. Count me out.

GuessWho 02-05-04 12:03 PM

No, but I may rent it.

I've never seen it.

kingtopher 02-05-04 12:03 PM

While it isn't something you want to watch all the time, I still think it is certainly worth owning and I plan to pick it up, along with the "Broken Silence" companion set that is coming out the same day (haven't heard anything about this in a while though). I do find the subject interesting and have read some literature about it. Not many films can do the holocaust justice at all, but it will sit proudly alongside "Night and Fog" and "The Pianist" in my collection. Utterly sad films, but essential viewing, in my opinion.

This movie is highly overrated. Count me out.
that can be said about any of his films, or even him ..

count me out as well

Josh H 02-05-04 12:09 PM

I've seen it two or three times.

I think it's a great movie, but I probably won't buy it. It's just such a hard movie to watch, even though it's extremely well done, it just wouldn't get enough viewings to justify the cost for me.

Eplicon 02-05-04 12:55 PM

I pre-ordered mine a few weeks ago, but as been said here already, this is one of those films that is very hard to get repeated viewings out of due to the nature of the material. I saw it theatrically when it first came out, but was too emotionally drained by the time it was over. It took me another four years before I even saw it again. I've only seen it a total of four times in all, the last, I think was in 2000, when PBS aired it.

mikewendt 02-05-04 01:21 PM

i'll pick it up

AberAber 02-05-04 01:56 PM

The first time I watched it, it was bad, but I was a bit younger. The second time it moved me to tears.

I'll buy it, it's one of those movies like Escape from Sobibor, when you're feeling sad about things, you watch it, and suddenly the sadness turns away from you, but to back then.

Never Again.

Johnny Zhivago 02-05-04 02:21 PM

I'll pick it up from Columbia House when it becomes available for enrollment (June 9th). Not in any hurry to own this one but I would like to see it again on DVD > I don't rent. :)

IIRC, and I've only seen it once, I thought Schindler's List was one of Spielberg's better films... Of course, that's not saying too much... I'm not a big fan of his work. At any rate, again IIRC, it's not a film that would receive heavy rotation in my collection... But it is one that I might be interested in keeping. If not, it'll just go in the trade pile...

CasEjonz 02-05-04 02:31 PM

Hey, Do we not watch BAMBI even though the mother gets killed?!
Do we not watch Life is Beautiful and that is a sad film!?
I first watched Schindler's on VHS years ago and planned on watching one tape one night and finishing it the next evening. WRONG!! I was so gripped by the film I stayed up way late to watch the whole thing. Then I watched it again a couple days later. I have looked forward to getting this on DVD for some time and will pick it up and watch and rewatch. I think it is a special movie that reaches out and touches us all. It will get more play than alot of my DVDs

Cocopugg 02-05-04 02:32 PM

Nope, if I need to cry I'll live my own life thanks.

danwiz 02-05-04 02:48 PM

Answer to JM1, who said that I should make up my OWN MIND and not base my decision on what other people say.

I saw the film in the theater when it was released, and from the other poll I then remembered how depressing the film was to see. After reading the threads in that poll, recalling my feelings after seeing it in the theater, and thinking long and hard on the matter I THEN made my decision not to buy it.

So, I based my decision on my memories, and thanks to the other poll, I was forced to recall those memories rather than basing my purchase decision on my normal impulse of "Ohhh, gotta have that DVD because I remember the movie in the theater".

Yes, it was (is) a very good movie, can't disagree with anybody there. Do I want to watch it again and again? NO! Therefore, no purchase.

shockey80ny 02-05-04 06:14 PM

Must Own.

shizawn 02-05-04 06:24 PM

I'll be buying it. I can't see myself watching it all that much, but I definitely want it in my collection.

MJKTool 02-05-04 06:42 PM

No way. I really do not like these depressing types of movies. There is already enough sadness in real life, I dont need it when Im relaxing and trying to escape for a couple hours.

QuiGonJosh 02-05-04 07:00 PM

How can any film lover not have this in his/her DVD collection? Its like Citizen Kane...every serious film lover NEEDS to have it!

QuikSilver 02-05-04 07:17 PM

No I will not be buying this film on dvd. Like a lot of people had said, the movie is remarkable but I can't watch it over and over.

ianholm 02-05-04 07:25 PM

It's overrated. Not buying.
