Wow! Asked and answered... thanks!

And please forgive my laziness for not checking the correct spelling of Mary Ann.

Grrrrrrr...........received the set and it is very difficult to free the discs from their center retainers. Anyone else finding the same?

Be careful to in trying the method where you lift one point on the disc and rotate it free as there is a rough spot on the case underneath the disc which could - I suppose - scuff/scratch the DVD.

It's because many of them have a tiny penis and since they can't afford an expensive car, this is the only way that they can feel masculine.

Hmmm.....don't think I've ever quoted myself before...but anyway........

In case there are some other rookies like me having a tough time freeing the DVDs. The best way I've come up with so far is:

With one hand press the release on the center retainer, slide the tip of your finger on the other hand under the disc at around the 10:30 spot (if you're looking at the DVD as a clock face), then run the very tip of your finger around counter-clockwise under the disc (don't let the DVD spin in its retainer while doing this) and when you reach around 6:00 it should pop free.

Hmmmm.......I wonder......if I replace every mention of the term "DVD/disc" in the above with the word "woman" ....and add just a dash more creativity then this can probably serve a dual purpose as my first ever post in the Mature Forum.

Oh yeah, the above also works going from 2:30 to 6:00 clockwise...and probably other ways too. Hope someone finds this helpful.

This is a headache for me also, especially removing
the very first disc in the set. The next time I pull out the
disc(s) to watch, I plan to put them back in a more user
friendly generic holder.

Its that darn Gilligan screwing around with the center retainer.

Excuse me while I smack him in the head again.

The first season of GILLIGAN'S ISLAND was actually was colorized by Ted Turner, and those versions aired extensively on TBS and TNT throughout the 90s. A number of colorized shows were also released on VHS, two to a tape.

In recent years, TV Land and now Hallmark have been running the original B/W versions.

Not only did Billionare Ted colorize Gilligan's Island but he also did the same thing to a few B&W movies as well.

Yeah, but even he caved in and left CITIZEN KANE alone.

I got this set and I loved it. Does anyone know if they plan on releasing the following two seasons on DVD?

It was tried. After some experimenting it was deemed almost impossible to do because there is so much black in the movie.

Ah, you have a keen eye for composition ...

This was (partially) explained in the book Gilligan's Island - A Retrospective (page 23).

Dawn Wells who played Mary Ann Summers was earning money at the time doing commercial TV work for a local L.A. car dealership owned Jerry Earle (Earle Chevrolet). Earle had already cast Ms. Wells in several TV commercials before she landed the Gilligan's Island opportunity. Earle was good friends with Howard Duff who was married to Ida Lupino. Ida was an accomplished actress as well as director, having directed Bewitched as well as other TV shows before directing some Gilligan's Island episodes. Lupino was good friends with G.I.'s creator Sherwood Schwartz.

Lupino asked for a favor of Schwartz wanting a shot of Dawn Wells (in the character of Mary Ann) for a cut-out for a promotional display for Earle's on-sales-floor dealerships. Rights needed to be transferred for the CBS-owned property. This was the shot of Mary Ann in the first episode that was edited out of Dawn's first episode.

Further explaination comes from a Gilligan's Island fan site:

http://www.gilligansisle.com/main.html

With rights transferred, the problem was not editing the material back into the episode but obtaining rights to the material. Earl and his heirs are no longer in the car dealership business and rights to the image could not be found to be transferred back.

From Schwartz's on-line discussion with the show's fans:

Btw, from the book:

It said that it was untrue that Raquel Welch auditioned for the part of Mary Ann.

That the part of Mary Ann was based on the character of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

Also, Mary Ann is not with an 'e'

Ah, sorry about that, I thought that it was fairly obvious that this was a joke.

Not only is there no such book but I thought for sure someone in this very cynical lot was going to call me out for bull about editing out an image of Mary Ann from the TV show ... after all wouldn't just taking a still photo work out better?

Anyway, sorry about that, I really thought I was going to get hammered and was just going with the flow of colorization and the like.

My bad.

napstimpy 02-10-04 07:12 PM

I feel so used :)

I'll admit I completely of took your reply in a "I'm not sure I'm tracking with you, but you sure sound reasonable" way, especially with the fake rights issue.

I even looked at the link (and found nothing you cited, of course).

I re-read it a few times, scratched my head, and decided it was Gilligan's Island, after all. Enough brain-power spent.

Nicely done (you bastard :) )... sell me a bridge next time.

So... that means we have no idea about the zoom then?
