Better Version of Scarface to Buy?
 

which one is better overall?

the newly released anniversary edition or the version that went out of print. I'm not too interested in that 'what rappers think of scarface' deal that the new anniversary edition has. I'm just interested in GOOD extras, overall image quality/transfer, and sound. any help is definately appreciated

The older version is a non-anamorphic travesty.

Get the newer version, with an anamorphic print (albeit a below-average one) that's streets ahead of the old release. It also carries over the old release's features, so you don't lose out.

And make sure it's WIDESCREEN.

Agreed, the OOP release was crap, the new one has much better sound, including DTS, and the picture was much improved

Hands down, the new version. More supplements, way better picture, audio, menus, everything. The only thing about the old version that was better was the booklet. Definitely buy the new one.

The new versions looks good for an older film. Definitely a no-brainer.

Not so, the original release has the trailer, which the new one doesn't have.

But the trade off is worth it

New one, hands down.

Since the original release was considered by almost everyone to be one of the <i>worst</i> transfers ever, it hardly seems like a real choice.

I agree on all the comments on the film itself, but there are a couple of extra items on the OOP release that are of note:

1) "Making-Of Scarface" documentary
2) Outtakes

I hear the the "Making of" Documentary is very good, although I have not had a chance to watch mine yet. The Outtakes you can probably pass on.

The making-of was simply split up into seperate featurettes, and more footage was added. It is still on the new release.

Yes, the outtakes were simply deleted scenes, not outtakes. The new one has all those plus more. The picture is definately better on the new one, so pick that one up. The sound is horrendous on both, but what are you gonna do?

Great price and DTS to boot!

For picture quality it will have to be the new version, as well as sound... although the DTS track as well as the DD on the new release are some of the worst I've heard. Very tinny, lacks uummpppfff, and almost near absence of surround activity. Then again it was even worse on the old release!

I think it has the trailer on the aniversary edition (newer one)

The new version has better video ans audio quality than the OOP version.

- Theatrical trailer

So basically you have a 170 minute film, a 50 minute documentary, and a 2 minute trailer... all on one disc = bad compression. :)

The New Release (2 DVDs):
- 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen Format
- English Dolby Digital 5.1
- English DTS 5.1
- French Dolby Digital 2.0
- Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0
- "Creating Scarface" featurette (30 mins)
- "The Rebirth of Scarface" featurette (10 mins)
- "Acting Scarface" featurette (15 mins)
- "Scarface: The TV Version - a look at the two versions" featurette (3 mins)
- "Def Jam presents The Origins of a Gangsta'" featurette (30 mins)
- Deleted scenes

The film gets it's own disc and the extras get it's own disc. The documentary on the old DVD release is split up into parts and expanded upon. You just miss out on a trailer and an insert.
