Marx Bros 5 Disc set coming May 4th !!!
Taken from USA Today:
The Marx Brothers are romping to DVD in fine style. The Marx Brothers Collection, a five disc set, comes to DVD May 4th with seven films from the second half of the top comedy team's movie career, including their masterpiece A Night At The Opera. "We wanted them out with an irresistible price ($59.92 for seven movies) so that people will buy the whole collection," says George Feltenstein, senior vice president for classic catalog. " We've got to get the new generation hooked on their timeless humor. This has been a high priority for a long time. There are new documentaries for A Night At The Opera and A Day At the Races, and we've loaded up every disc with classic cartoons and shorts from the same year of each movie. The last time the movies themselves looked this spiffy was probably when they first came out" The three most highly regarded movies in the set, Opera (1935), Races (1937) and A Night In Casablanca (1946), also are being sold as individual DVDs. Note to fans of the early Marx Brothers: Universal, which now owns the first five Marx Brothers Movies has no plans to relase them on DVD. |
 I see 5 DVDs w/ 7 movies but they only list 3 of them... what else is in there?
|
I'm surprised that all seven titles weren't mentioned. Anyone know?
|
Here is the link to the article:
http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/...arx-bros_x.htm But klodge has quoted almost the entire thing above. |
Great news - but why is Universal NOT releasing the others? Fortunately I have those early titles on Image, but they really deserve to be back in print.
|
I guess we'll have to wait until someone has it available for ordering to figure out what's in it. Looking over the movie list though
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000050/ I'd take a guess and say it's probably Night At The Opera A Day At the Races Night In Casablanca Go West At The Circus Room Service The Big Store |
Wher'e "Duck Soup"????
That;s one of my all-time favorite Marx brother episodes.....where is it? And wasn't there one episode with Gummo(the other brother), what was name of that one? I'm sorry Universalwon't release the earlier ones, but then again, Universal is known for screwing everything up these days!!!!!
|
duck soup is one of the earlier movies (1932?) I think everything from 36 is property of mgm/warner
|
YEA!!!!
I have been waiting for this a LONG GOSH DARN TIME!!! Now if we could only get Cocoanuts! And Animal Crackers!! *HONK* ...And Two Hard Boiled Eggs. And Monkey Business! And Horse Feathers!! And Duck Soup!!! *HONK* ... Make that three Hard Boiled Eggs |
When I first got my DVD player, the Marx Brothers movies on DVD were #1 on my list but were sadly out of print. I'm really looking forward to this to this release.
This really could be the year of Warner Brothers with the Marx Brothers, Friends, Scooby Doo, and Flinestones... along with another Looney Tunes Golden Collection most likely. Paul |
What??? No love for Animal Crackers? I was lucky enough to find this new at Barnes and Noble this summer.
One of the funniest non sequiter gems comes from this classic: "Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water. And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does." |
Bring 'em on!
And Universal, if you're listening, please, PLEASE re-release the others... |

I am all over these.
|
I picked up the 3-disc Image set for 20 some bucks a few years ago. I was shocked when I discovered it selling on eBay for ~$200 a while back. This will make a nice addition to the family.

I call BS. There was an article in the New York Times a few months ago where Universal was quoted saying they would release Duck Soup along with other Marz Bros movies sometime in 2004. So, there are plans... Okay, so Universal owns five ... now think about the Classic Monster packs, and the other big "combo" deals they're doing lately ... but specifically the monster packs, you've got *five* Frankenstein movies in the pack ... you've got *five* Dracula movies (if you count the Spanish dub as a seperate movie, as they're doing in their listings) ... and they've mentioned they're going into other genres as well, notably Abbott and Costello. I'm with you, I think Universal will be releasing something real soon. |
And wasn't there one episode with Gummo(the other brother), what was name of that one? duck soup is one of the earlier movies (1932?) What??? No love for Animal Crackers? Incidentally, I'm curious ... why is everybody assuming that it's 'Room Service' and not 'Love Happy'? Reason I ask is that I was under the impression that all of their later films were done for MGM except for 'Room Service', which was somewhere else. (I forget where.) So, why wouldn't this be all the MGM films? Note, though, that I hope it's 'Room Service', 'cause I love 'Room Service' and hate 'Love Happy'. |
"The Big Store"-now in addition to the Brother's comedy, I will be able to blast Tony Martin singing "The Tenement Symphony" in remastered 5.1 surround sound from my home theater: "The Cohns and the Kellys, The Campbells and Vermichellis, They're all a part omy tenement symphoni-e-e-e-e...In four flats....". (I know, I'm one sick puppy!)

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski of "Ed Wood", "The People vs. Larry Flynt", "Man on the Moon" and "Auto Focus" fame are working on a Marx. Bros. biopic. I imagine Universal would release their Marx. Bros. films as a tie-in when it comes out. According to IMDB, it's a Universal release so I'd say it's almost a given, but they also list a December 25, 2005 release date, so it'll probably be a while.
