As is the case with most MGM DVD releases, there is no DTS track on the new Rain Man SE.

But don't let that stop you from buying it. It's a really nice set.

Set?!? Is this a 2-discer? I was going to pass on another crappy attempt at a single disc MGM SE (which is the reason I only own like 10 MGM dvds)... but if it's a 2-disc set, I may buy.

No, it's a single disc. Nice extras, though, and a decent transfer.

I don't own the bare bones, so this is a no-brainer for me, especially since I collect Best Picture Oscar winners.

That's the goofy part of it to me. Being such a good movie, with all the awards, including Best Picture, why in the hell is this a single disc release?!? Windtalkers gets an astronomical 3-disc SE release, and Rain Man gets shit on. I'm going to go to bed and cry myself to sleep now.
Goodnight.

People will buy Rain Man SE no matter what. As for Windtalkers, MGM hoped that by making it a 3-disc set, more people would fall into their trap.

Looking forward to picking this up, though may have to wait until it becomes a Columbia House enrollment. I don't have the previous version, so i'll definitely get this eventually.

Smart... what would have gone into a three-disc release of Rain Man? I mean, really. Tone it down a notch.

Please! Gimme a break. I mean really, use your brain. I know you're smarter than that... I hope.

-Extensive interviews with cast members, directors, writers, producers, etc...
-Commentaries
-Documenatry(s) and more information / education of Autism.
-Higher bitrate transfer with full bitrate Dts and full bitrate DD sound.

There's the tip of the iceberg for you. Honestly, just about ANY dvd release has the potential for a massive Collector's Edition Set, but it seems most of the time that it is not the movies that we love most that get that treatment. It is whatever movies the studios think will suck the money out of the consumers pocket. You can buy it if you want, and you can criticise me that I'm not, but the fact that more people do not speak out about what they want on these releases is going to directly contribute to studios not giving the consumers what the want. I'm kind of hoping this will be another stab in the back, and that another region will get the real special edition treatment, then maybe I'll buy that one.

A practical question about the new SE release.

Is the transfer the same on the new SE edition of RAIN MAN as the original edition? I have that edition and it is anamorphic and done in 5.1 DD.

From what I can see, the only extras are some commentaries, a deleated scene and an original featurette. Now, if the deleated scene and the commentary by Barry Levinson are the same as what were on the old LD version, that's not really worth it. Barry's commentary put me to sleep. That would leave the commentaries by screenwriter Ronald Bass, and screenwriter Barry Morrow and an original featurette (which might be 8 or 10 minutes).

It's looking like I can pass on this.

I haven't seen a review yet to confirm if the transfer is the same as the previous release, although this one looks very good.

I never bought the LD so this is totally a keeper for me.

I've just put my review up for DVDTalk:

I had the earlier version, so I was able to make a comparison.

Looks like the transfer is crap in so many words. This sounds like the same transfer as before but just compressed differently --- and we all know how poor early MGM releases were. It's ashame a truely new transfer wasn't created.

Thanks, that's exactly the info I was looking for.

Since I own the original DVD release and I used to own the old LD release (so I've seen the deleted scene and heard Barry's commentary, although it may be different on this version), it looks like no upgrade for me.

I'm very happy with the quality of the transfer of the original, at least until they unroll HD DVD.
