2005 James Bond Remasters

We've all heard the news of the remastering of the Bond soundtracks for 2005, but apparently there will be new digital transfers for all films through The World Is Not Enough, as well as new extras. More details here.

Just for accuracy - this is a UK site and may be only limited to R2. I hope not though.

Stu 17 01-26-04 10:20 AM

How many times are they going to release these movies?

chanster 01-26-04 10:28 AM

eh, going to pass. I enjoy the Bond movies, but the current discs are great, and I really don't need to see more of Michael Wilson or Barbara Broccoli telling us how good ole Cubby was just a great person and great man.

kthemmes 01-26-04 10:30 AM

still waiting to re-lease them as single discs. I need two 007 movies to complete my collection. Im still upset with the re-issue of box sets over individule discs

theDVDfreak 01-26-04 10:32 AM

Its an American company doing the sound remastering though. I doubt they would ONLY release this set in R2.

Last Spring I sold my first 3 collection set for $450 on Ebay. Im thinking of buying another set, just to sell on Ebay this time next year. They should be hard to find in a few months and by early 2005, I should be able to make a Mortgage payment. I hope I can hold out and not open them, I could make another $100 probably.

theDVDfreak 01-26-04 10:43 AM

Forgot something

I had this set for many years, I bought them when they were first released. The Die Another Day disc is the best yet for picture and sound, blows away all the other disc in a heartbeat. Ive had a HDTV 16x9 for many years also, and the older transfers suck. Some of these have been around since DVD has been out. By todays standards DVD has come a long way and some of these new transfers there doing looks pretty awesome. MGM has put out some pretty spectacular transfers in the past year and I cant wait to see the difference in this new set.

Also I hope all the Brosnan flicks get DTS tracks. Just makes sense since all of them were origionally released in DTS. It will be a nice bonus to get other films with a new DTS track, but Im not holding my breath. I am for the Tank chase in Goldeneye though, DTS of course. Ill be a DVDtalk shade of blue by the time I get my hands on this set.

LD versions of both Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies are available with Full Bit Rate DTS (I know, I have both!). So, the only Brosman title released to consumers without DTS is currently The World is Not Enough.

I'll pass...as much of a Bond fan as I am...I'm happy with the current DVD's and the mono tracks and transfers on the old ones...

Wannabe 01-26-04 11:59 AM

Remastered or not, I'll pass. I find my attention wandering everytime I watch one of these. I'd rather see a "best of bond" retrospective released...one that just has stuff blowing up.

Ginwen 01-26-04 12:14 PM

The current DVDs are good enough for me. Still, I guess it's good they are making updated versions for those who want them (if these were my favorite movies ever, I'd be thrilled about the new versions).

PatrickMcCart 01-26-04 01:27 PM

I'd buy remastered editions of Thunderball and Goldfinger. The "special edition" DVD's look horrible.

try ebay

The only thing I'm looking forward to is a proper uncut release of OHMSS.

JoeyOhhhh 01-26-04 02:02 PM

If they do some major restoration on them I would pick them up.

layth1 01-26-04 03:24 PM

I'm happy with the 3 box sets that I have. I bet when they get re-released they're gonna be more expencive than the current box sets too.

I'm also happy with my box sets. I can see them releasing it in new box sets at a higher price with a different movie mix.

The current discs are great. I probably won't be upgrading my Bonds until HD-DVD.

Classic Films 01-26-04 04:02 PM

I don't see how many times they can remaster the same films. Films made in the 60's (Sean Connery) are only going to look so good. Until HD DVD becomes reality I see no reason to upgrade these.

I guess they figure if people haven't noticed or cared that Bond movies are the most formulaic films of all time and will keep turning out in droves to see the exact same movie done over and over (except with a new watch and car each time), then why would people bat an eye at them releasing the DVDs over and over?

What's wrong with the current cut of OHMSS on DVD?

I know that Living Daylights and Octopussy have framing issues and missing subtitles, but I wasn't aware of any problems with OHMSS.

FWIW, I've bought these movies too many damn times -- on CED in the early 80s, on VHS in the late 80s (those were great, with the Pink Panther cartoons on them too) and on DVD in the late 90s.

MGM never responded to several emails I sent them in 2003 about getting replacement, corrected copies of Octopusst and Living Daylights. The corrected discs were available for a short time in late 2000, as I recall.

Anyone know if the versions from the 2003 box sets are also incorrect?

darkside 01-26-04 05:35 PM

I have all the current SEs and I won't be buying them again. I think the early movies look fine and getting fake DD 5.1 remixes on Dr No and From Russia With Love is a reason for me not to buy them.

I'm glad they are going back and remastering them, but honestly I'm getting tired of double dipping and it seems like a waste to do it on DVDs that are already SEs.

From IMDb: R1 DVD release omits a few seconds from a mountain climing scene, showing the shadow of a moving cable car on a cliff face.

It also apparently contains a completely different cut of the car race

Basically, nothing. There is a few seconds there, nothing major or important.
