Did you notice this about Lost In Space?

Picked up LIS tonight at Costco. As I was standing in line, I looked at the back of the box set - color pictures of scenes! I thought "LIS is in B&W"! They colorized film cells for the box art.

Now I know LIS is in B&W, and the scenes used should have been too. Vestiges of Ted Turner...

Yep. They sell more copies this way.

I don't think the pictures were necessarily colorized. There were a lot of publicity shots taken during the run of the show, and that's most likely what was used for the packaging. Notice that the robot is pretty colorless in all shots except for his voice window. The robot didn't get "colorized" for the series until it went to color and they made him/it all pretty and stuff.

I think there are some LIS in color - maybe later seasons.

A lot of black & white images get colorized for home video boxes. J6P likes the pretty colors, and B&W images seem sterile to the unimaginative eye.

Case in point:

Original poster style. Now, the DVD cover:

S1 was B&W, S2 & S3 were in color.

I'm one of the few on the board that saw it originally. Unfortunately we had a black and white TV so all seasons were B&W for us.

I cherished my ViewMaster copy of Lost in Space because it was the only way to see it in color.

In a similar vein, I was so excited to see "Flipper" and "Batman - the Movie" in the theater because it was the first time I saw those shows in color.

Kids got it easy these days :p

Those pictures are not taken from episodes. They are posed publicity photos that were shot in color; *not* black-and-white photos or screen caps that were colorized. Many of those same photos are available to the media on Fox's and its PR firm's press sites.

I can confirm what rasalas has posted.

I just watched the first 3 episodes today... Lost In Space never looked this good.... certainly not when I saw it during it's first broadcast run... nor when it went into syndication... nor on cable.

What a gem! And a very reasonable price (I paid $50 shipped from Amazon).

Heres another weird thing on the Lost in Space box set...

The last episode (Follow the Leader) of the 1st season has a trailer for the 1st episode of season 2....in color.

That must have been a first that a b&w show has a color trailer for the next season. The funny thing is that the trailer ends with a " to be continued next week" tag which clearly was for next seasons color episodes.

As was already mentioned in this thread, Seasons 2 and 3 were in color.

Oh, ok :)

If anyone watched the special about Irwin Allen
a few years ago on the scifi channel.
The Special mentioned that he filmed some of the
first season shots in color. Hoping to use it later
on film or tv projects. Many of Jupiter 2 Flying
and Cyclops scenes are in color.
They actually showed some of the color clips.

So I am not surprised that some color exists
from the 1st season.
Its just too bad that the 1st season set
could not have included some of this stuff.

sracer 01-18-04 10:15 PM

There's still time for that... there is still a Season 2 and Season 3 boxset to be released. :D

I'm just glad that it has finally been released at a level of quality that I'm pleased with.

This goes off topic, but did anyone else fall out of their chair laughing at Don's scream when he falls off the chariot in "The Hungry Sea"? I think that goes right up against Luke's scream in "Empire"! :D
