Why must DVD's go OOP?
 

topic...just really wondering why DVD's, new and old, box sets, special editions, Criterion's, Disney stuff, etc..go out of print?

It's nature's selection... Survival of the Fittest.



Honestly, it has alot to do with licensing rights. How many can be printed, for how long, etc.

They are not going to keep pressing the same damn discs forever. Then how would they get you to buy the next special edition?

Many times, impending re-releases. Other times, contracts and licenses expire. Disney is a different case. They like to control their product line and generate "buzz" with their titles.

Thinking of it this way, who the hell is going to continue pressing films that are already over saturated in the market? they can't press films forever.

Everything goes OOP eventually. It's just you never hear about it till everyone starts wanting more. VHS went OOP as well. remember Star Wars going in and out of print every few years? All it means is the company just doesn't feel that they need to press anymore. the potential buyers of said film have already bought it and/or the amount on the shelves has reached a limit were not enough stores are ordering it to keep a pressing of it needed.

either that or they want to make a killing off all the copies they have in storage on ebay.

Some simply go OOP because they know I've put off buying it and they want to mess with my head.

Also retailers don't like keeping products on the shelf that don't sell and warehouses don't make money if in-stocks don't ship. OTOH it makes for great sales when they clear the stuff out!
