Peter O'toole performances missing on dvd

Two of Peter O'tooles' greatest performances are still missing on dvd. BECKET and GOODBYE MR CHIPS. Any info on any future release of these films?

Goodbye Mr. Chips is a great film. I really wish this would come out. I like it better than the original and have always been a Petula Clark fan.

...I thought I'd found a (R4/PAL) DVD of "GMC" for you ---
...but it turns out this is yet another (the third!) version of this story...

. . . :o . . .

I never heard of that one. It looks like a BBC television production.

I seem to remember some major critic, maybe Pauline Kael, citing O'Toole's performance in Becket as the finest leading performance by an actor *ever*. It's kind of inexplicable that such an important film has been utterly ignored by the studios. :(

Look at how long it took MGM to release Zulu.

MPI annouced that it was releasing a "restorted" DVD of Becket twice in 2003 (DVDPlant even had it up for preorder), then pulled
the title off its release chart both times. Last time I checked MPI's website, it was listed as "coming soon."

I had forgotten this. This could be bad news. This may be a licensing problem.
According to IMDB, this is a Paramount film with the video rights in the U.S. being owned by VCI. There is no mention of who owns the DVD rights. It may be Paramount.

Let us also hope for Lord Jim to be released on DVD this year.
Incidentally Columbia recently restored the 70MM roadshow version of this and has been showing it around the country. Columbia might want to consider Night of the Generals a good candidate for a dvd release.
Best
Greg

What about O'Toole's best performance IMO, Man of La Mancha. Does anyone know about this film?
Thanks,
The General

Amazon says MAN OF LA MANCHA comes out on dvd on april 20.

Beritolam 01-13-04 10:23 PM

Good news on MAN OF LA MANCHA, I've been waiting for BECKET since I've owned a DVD player. I'll buy anything that has O'Toole in it, even the in the "less than good" movies, his acting always seems to be perfect.

The world would be a better place with a Becket DVD (cleaned up of course).
And I'd like to see Lord Jim on DVD.
