Has "Pretty Baby" DVD been censored???

Recently picked this one up at Walmart for $5.50 (had several copies available). Flick was better than remembered (acting was better, anyway....photography was gorgeous...to be expected from Louis Malle). Anyway, I distinctly remember a scene (or two) with a standing Brooke Shields in all her glory (including a bare "bikini area"). I believe one such display was in the scene when Keith Carradine throws her out of the room & locks the door....Brooke is crying and trying to open the doorknob. The new version has a shot from the back only. Just curious...I have noticed similar censoring in other movies (Zandalee comes to mind...oddly enough, also set in Lousiana)...in which certain shots are deleted/shortened from one screening (say, the version shown on Cinemax/HBO/TMC) to the version released on VHS or DVD. Maybe my memory is just playing tricks...after all, the movie was released about 25 years ago! Can anybody confirm or refute the "changes"? BTW...it is curious that Walmart carries this DVD...hard to believe that no one has complained considering the notorious reputation this movie had when it came out.

I think you are misremembering it. I saw it on HBO about a month ago & it was exactly as you described & seems to resemble what everyone else saw. Since the nudity appeared intact & everything such as the photography scene which is quite lengthy.

Of course it seems some sickos have been spreading rumors about it being censored & so forth. Really creepy I think, just look this up on imdb.com & see what some people say on the forum. Truely sickening!

I did find one copy in the WM bin a few weeks back & picked it up to see the entire film, since I missed half of it on HBO which does'nt seem to have aired it since.

Pretty disturbing film from what I did see.

It's the same version I've always seen and I saw it first in 1981 or so on HBO.

Wonderful film, beautifully shot (Sven Nykvist, his usual brilliant job) and a memorable and thoughtful movie. Malle was an artist of the higest order.

BLATENT THREADCRAP

This movie is the sickest film I have ever seen. I would think that if WM could carry this then why not American Wedding: Unrated. It is no where near as offensive as this child porn film

BLATANT SUSPENSION. - Static

You should report them to the FBI.

I read on an other forum somewhere that Walmart sells censured versions of movies. I dont know if they do it themselves or if they request it from movie distributors. But from what I have read, they do it pretty frequently.

I think I know what you're talking about - the film was intended for showing at 1.85:1, which is what the DVD shows. A fullscreen showing shows a bit more, since the mattes are removed top and bottom.

They were going to do that, but if they're still planning to, it's not in effect yet.

They do, however, carry fullscreen and lower-rated versions whenever possible.

The DVD has not been censored. And I fully agree with the observations given by Buck - it's a gorgeous movie.

Well the nudity itself is not disturbing since it is just plain old nudity, not meant to be sexual in any form(therefore does not constitute as 'child porn' as some claim). But putting the nudity in the context of the themes/content of the film does make it disturbing, gross, sickening & eww inducing ucomfortable. Yet that is basically the point of the film as it documents these peoples lives.
