How do music DVD's compare to their CD brethren?
I was just wondering what everyone thought on this. I know that the DVD's contain things like extras and videos but Im more concerned with sound quality. I know that the discs don't have DVD-A or SACD tracks on them but are they better in any way sound wise?

Just off the top of my head (not many to compare)...
Talking Heads:Stop Making Sense The DVD not only has the 2.0 stereo mix but also the 5.1 theatrical mix plus a 5.1 studio mix. The 2.0 is still killer but the 5.1 theatrical is slightly more spatial. The surrounds aren't used to full advantage (like The Eagles Hell Freezes Over) though. So, a slight advantage in favor of the DVD in the sound quality department and a big advantage in the sound choice department. |
just like with movies, some sound great and some sound like they were recorded in a tin can. my King Crimson and Steve vai sound .

If more music videos came with PCM tracks instead of DD2.0 then they would sound as good as the cd.

I have the dark side of the moon SACD and it sounds awesome, I also have Metallica's "Black Album" DVD-Audio and it sounds great too. You hear alot of stuff that's hard to hear on the cd. You can hear the orchestra a lot more on "nothing else matters" and stuff like the riffle on "the god that failed".
The 5.1 mixes sound great and I wish there was more selection. SACD's are mostly classical and there are only a few DVD-Audio's that I like. I'll be picking up the Megadeth and Iron maiden DVD's though. |
